Linoleum floors are floors with materials made from renewable resources like linseed oil, ground cork dust, wood flour, mineral fillers and other pigments that are added to the materials for color and texture. The finest linoleum flooring is called "inlaid" flooring. It is very durable since it has been created by laying solid pieces of the material together. Cheaper linoleum comes in different grades and have thinner layers, which wear and tear more easily. Linoleum is good quality when it is flexible and does not crack.
Linoleum was first created by an Englishman by the name of Frederick Walton. He took notice that solidified linseed oil was very rubbery back in 1855. He accelerated the oxidizing process and heated the material to make a thick coating, which was then varnished. He initially planned to sell it as a water-repellant fabric and he even patented the process in 1860. The cloth, however, fell apart quickly and it took a long amount of time to create it. Since no one shows interest in his varnish and his first factory burned to the ground, he had to come up with a new method.
Once the new method was formed and the creation of the item was much easier, Walton began calling it Kampticon. Kamptulicon is the name of a floor covering that existed at the time and Walton intentionally chose the name in a similar manner. He later changed it to linoleum, which he got from the Latin words that mean oil and flax. He started a company in 1864 to produce the material and though it was not popular at first, and operated at a loss for several years, it began to grow during an intense advertising campaign in London.
Once linoleum finally took off, other inventors took note and began trying out their own experiments. Walton had a patent on his procedures, but other inventors figured out faster ways to do similar things that ended up in materials that were not high in quality, but that were much less expensive. Walton was faced with high competition.
Today, linoleum is considered to be an inexpensive, but durable area that does well in high traffic areas. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it became the most popular material for hallways and other passages and it often surrounded carpet squares in other rooms. Later in the 20th century, it also took over kitchen floors because it was water resistant and easy to maintain. It also holds up against breakage if anything is dropped on it.
Linoleum has a long history and today, it is one of the most inexpensive ways to get a nice, durable, comfortable look in many different rooms of the house.
