Tile flooring is a great investment for your home. Not only are tile floors attractive, but it takes a very long time for them to wear out. They also need very little maintenance and they are easy to keep clean and looking nice. As you look at tile flooring installation tips, you will find that it is a type of floor you can likely put in yourself, which will save you even more.
As you get ready to work on tile flooring installation, you will first want to remove whatever type of flooring you already have on your floors. If you have carpeting, you will also want to take the strips along the edges of the room off the base floor. If you have anything glued to the floor, remove the sticky adhesives that were used before so you have a clean, dry, level floor for your tile flooring installation job.
Once the floor is back in its original state and very clean, make sure it is stable and does not have any flex anywhere. Floor tiles are hard, but they are also rather brittle. If the floor underneath your tiles bends, the tiles could crack over time. If you feel your floor giving when you take a step, you will want to stabilize the floor before you lay the tiles to ensure that they will not break later on.
You can stabilize your floor by adding some nails to the subfloor or placing floor joists underneath the floor to create a bridge between the existing joists. Both options will give the floor extra support and might help you level out your bending issues. Once the floor is clean, clear, and stable, put a cement backer board on it with the right type of manufacturer recommended glue. You will nail the backer board into place as well.
As you continue with tile flooring installation, you will want to make sure the doors in the room will open over the floor. Place a piece of tile on top of the backer board and make sure the door will open over the height of the new floor. If it does not, you will want to remove the doors and sand them down on the bottom. It is a good idea to do that before the tile flooring installation is complete so you do not risk damaging or scratching the tiles once they are in place.
Keep in mind that tile flooring installation is one of the easiest types to do yourself, but not everyone feels they have the right tools or skills to carry out the project. If you do not think you can do it right, it might be best to hire a professional.
