If you have decided to install tile flooring in your home, you may find that the process is easy enough that you can do it yourself. There are plenty of professionals you can hire to do the job for you, but if you have the time, you might want to put the effort into installing the flooring yourself so you can save the money you would have to spend hiring someone else to do it for you.
The first thing you have to do to prepare to install tile flooring is remove the flooring that is already in your home. After the flooring is up and out of the way, clean the subfloor thoroughly and make sure there is no dust, debris, or stickiness left on the floor.
As you prepare the tiles, you will want to measure the length and width of the room so you can calculate square footage. You will want to get a carton or more extra of the tiles you have chosen just in case some break or you need to replace them someday. Matching tiles are not always readily available so it is best to buy them in advance.
Before you begin laying tiles, run a chalk line to the center of the room to help keep your lines straight as you begin to lay the tiles. It is usually best to fit a row of times along those chalk lines and around the doors. Use a dry fitting at this point with spacers between the tiles where you will later place the grout. Before you put any tile flooring done in a permanent manner, take a step back and look at the layout. You will want to have as many full tiles as you can in the center of the room and it is a good idea to match the cut tiles on each side so you can make the least amount of cuts possible. Lay tiles out and adjust the layout until you are happy with how it looks.
Once you have a few tiles in the right spots, use a thin set to hold them in place. This cement product comes in a powdery mix that feels like peanut butter. Use a trowel to spread the cement where the first few tiles will go. Do not spread it too far or it will dry and you will not have any tiles in place. When you put each tile into place, press it firmly down and then tap each of the four corners into place with a rubber mallet. Make sure to put spacers between every time so that you will have room for grout later. Tile flooring can take a while to install, but the results are worth the effort.
