Hardwood flooring is very common in the U.S. but bamboo options are becoming more popular as the years go on. Homeowners are drawn to the modern style and economic aspects of the bamboo floors. Bamboo flooring is also very wide in its appearances. Bamboo is not actually a hardwood so it can be damaged much more easily than actual hardwoods. But bamboo also costs much less and comes from a renewable resource, which many homeowners find appealing.
Bamboo is an element that is a member of the grass family. It comes from a plant that grows very quickly and is hollow on the inside. It is harvested primarily in Southeast Asia and then processed in many large mills before it comes over to the United States. It is then torn apart into fibers and then glued back together in the form of wood planks. Since the bamboo is carbonized, it takes a heating process to darken the wood from its original light, straw color.
Bamboo costs vary based on the type of flooring, as is true of any other flooring. Location is an important factor since it is cheaper to ship bamboo to the coasts than to somewhere that is far inland. In general, bamboo will cost around $2 per square foot in a simple, wood grain. For the heavily carbonized treated floors, it is more like $7-8 per square foot.
There are also different ways that companies make bamboo floorboards and some of these methods cost more than others. Weaves are less expensive, but not as durable while carbonized boards are much more expensive.
When you compare hardwood to bamboo, it is evident that hardwood does not have as many options. You cannot weave hardwood and you cannot carbonize it. But you can treat and stain the wood to get different effects. Overall, the labor costs for hardwood and bamboo floors are about the same. They are still rather important in the overall cost of the flooring, however and you will want to take them into consideration.
You will also want to study the area in which you plan to place the flooring. If it is a high traffic area, you might want to go with hardwood over bamboo since bamboo is more delicate and can show wear and tear faster. It also damages more easily than hardwood. If you are more concerned with environmental matters, on the other hand, bamboo is a great option for your flooring. Take all of the pros and cons of each into consideration before you make your final choice. Prioritize the list of things you really want in your flooring and then find the type that best suits your budget and your priorities.
