A very artistic kind of communication is music which can be attained through music instruments. Instruments produce certain tones and sounds, and when combined together, come up with a musical language. There are various types of music instruments, each one having a colorful and interesting history.
In 2500 B.C., the leftovers of music instruments of the time were found. Five hundred years after, a tablet was discovered in Mesopotamia where it had the first kind of music notation. Because of the hardship of obtaining historical data and clear proof from the different cultures' artifacts, archaeologists and other scholars cannot give the exact period when instruments were developed.
Of all the music instruments, the rattles and drums are considered the earliest and they were used as people danced. Later on, complex drums, trumpets and flutes arrived. These were utilized in spiritual rituals to gain attention and give instructions.
As different music instruments were made, people discovered that they produced different sounds, tone and pitch. They later found out that when these were combined, a nice sound was achieved and this was called a melody. More tones and substance emerged, thus music became an artistic representation. Individuals even conveyed their thoughts with one another through music.
There are different categories of music instruments which include percussion, strings, woodwinds, brass and voice. A percussion instrument produces sound when something hits it, thus causing it to vibrate. Examples of a percussion instrument are the xylophone, triangle, cymbals, piano and drums. A string instrument creates a sound when the strings are plucked, thus causing it to vibrate. Music instruments in the string family include guitar, violin, viola, sitar, bass, harp and cello.
A woodwind instrument creates a sound when a person blows air into the mouthpiece and makes the reed(s) or tube vibrate. Examples are the piccolo, saxophone, flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon. Instruments made of brass produce a sound when the lips of the player blow air inside its tube. Trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone, tuba, and bugle are examples of such kind of an instrument. Lastly, music can be produced by the human voice as it can be changed to come up with various pitches, tones, vibration and sounds.
Curt Sachs and Eric von Horbostel in 1914 made a system so as to classify music instruments that are still present today. This system has four groups and these are aerophones, membranophones, idiophones and chordophones. An aerophone produces sound when air passes through its cylinder such as the flute or pipe organ. Membranophones produce a sound when its stretched membrane vibrates. Examples of such instruments include drums.
Music instruments are now developed so as to come up with diverse tones and sounds. The sounds produced play a big part in a human being's life regardless of his faith and culture. There are religions that even use music to praise God. It is used to convey feelings and ideas while others used it to heal.
These days, people unwind after a hard day's work by listening to music. Without music, life can be boring. This is the reason why music instruments will always play a big part in people's lives.
