Exmoor is rising in popularity for mountain biking. It is unsurprising considering the beauty and diversity in the landscape and the profusion of bike trails and off road cycling opportunities. The Exmoor National Park is made up of open moorland in West Somerset and North Devon. It is named after the river Exe, one of the two rivers that drain off the moors, the other being the river Barle. Edging the moorland is 34 miles of stunning coastline.
For centuries, Exmoor was initially a royal park and hunting ground and remains a significant centre of horse-riding. This, today, provisions the avid mountain biker with countless well maintained bridleways to discover and it is an ideal environment for off-road cycling, far away from traffic.
The Exmoor Park Authority has produced numerous cycling maps and bike trail guides that are colour-coded. The easiest routes being signed in green and the hardest routes being signed black using the CTC standards.
Among the best routes are centred on Dunster Forest and Timberscombe. Cycling out from Dunster you may climb to the ridge of Grabbist Hill and revel in far-reaching views over the Bristol Channel to South Wales as well as over the moors towards Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. A superb rocky descent goes to Wootton Courtenay from where you are able to climb to Webber's post before tackling the final ascent of Dunkery Beacon. The views match the challenges for any adrenaline junky.
Equally the trails found close to Timberscombe take you to quiet stretches of woodland and forests where you can race over the tree-lined trails at exhilarating speeds. Mountain biking in Exmoor allows the adventurer to move deeper into the less explored areas and secluded spots of the Exmoor National Park.
For anyone in search of special challenges there is a Exmoor Eight which is a route 32 miles in total that starts at Winsford having a very steep climb towards the moors followed by a spectacular cruise to the Tarr Steps. A single track road is an option to get you to Withypool Cross if you would like stay away from the off-road routes which get exceptionally muddy during the wettest periods. A steep climb up and over Siddon Hill is rewarded with a roll down the Exe valley.
The Exmoor self-catering cottage at Higher Kitswall is the ideal base for mountain biking in Exmoor. Owners, Bev and Don, have over twenty years of experience of living in the Exmoor National Park. They have owned many horses during this time period and have intimate familiarity with the bridleways and access rights for mountain biking. Higher Kitswall cottage is set on the fringe of the Dunster Forest and is the location of their Arabian horse stud farm. Once you arrive at the cottage there's no need to use your vehicle anywhere as you're able to enjoy accessibility to the best mountain bike trails straight from the cottage and it is all traffic free for miles and miles! Bev and Don welcome mountain bikers to their Exmoor self-catering cottage and are willing to offer advice regarding the best trails in the region.
