Dietary supplements are health products taken for the purpose of getting extra nutrition for the body. The importance of a supplement is seen in recommended food intake where not everything we eat contains a complete set of nutrients that our body needs. In this case, a supplement is taken in with a complementary goal of maintaining or acquiring the daily doses of needed body nutrients. In general terms, these contain one or more of the following: amino acids, fatty acids, fiber, minerals, and vitamins. The following paragraphs discuss what each of these components do to the body.
Amino acids. Referred to as the body's initial building block, amino acids function to produce proteins. In turn, protein builds muscles in our body, improve the immune system, and facilitate the growth of bones. Enzymes, a type of protein, are used to aid in optimizing digestion.
Fatty acids. Fatty acids are essential in breaking down cholesterol. In the circulatory system, it helps thin the blood to avoid clots and regulates blood vessels. In the immune system, it helps prevent inflammation that leads to arthritis. In the nervous system, it helps develop brain functions. In other body areas, it helps regulate the function of the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and the liver.
Fiber. Although not directly absorbed by the body, fibers are essential in the digestive system. Particularly, fibers help regulate bowel movements, avoid development of hemorrhoids, decrease cholesterol levels in the blood, help in losing weight, and control the level of blood sugar in the body.
Minerals. Minerals often work with vitamins to optimize its effect on the body. Among its benefits are maintaining healthy bones, blood sugar regulation, healthy blood formation, improved immunity, and regulation of energy formation.
Vitamins. Vitamins have a general benefit on our body's health. Proper ingestion can help reduce the risk of diseases like Alzheimer's, stroke, cancer, heart disease, infectious diseases, eye disorders, osteoporosis, and even menstrual disorders.
A supplement can also have one of the following ingredients: an extract, a metabolite, a concentrate, or a combination.
With the definition above, dietary supplements have to be in a specific form to be called as such. The considerations in its classification under human intake are as follows:
State. This means that a supplement has to be in a variety other than the normal food we eat. Specifically, it should be a tablet, a capsule, in liquid form, a pill, or in powder form.
Dietary part. It should not be the main part of a person's diet; otherwise, it will be called a meal. Examples are meat, eggs, rice, wheat, and fruits. These are qualified as sources and not as dietary supplements within themselves. Besides, a supplement can never be a substitute for a full meal.
Identification. Consumers should be able to easily tell that a supplement is what it is by having the tag 'dietary supplement'. Its acquisition will not matter match as long as these products are properly identified. Other terms may be nutritional supplement and food supplement.
