Horseback riding is an outdoor sport thus it is possible for your saddlebags to get dusty, oily and dirty. A bag that is not clean does not give an appealing sight and it can speak of the kind of personality you as the owner have. These are two pouches hanging at the back of the saddle and they give style to your saddle and horse. Here are tips in making your saddlebags shine.
Prior to cleaning your saddle, check if it has rips and tears. You have to make the vital repairs before you start cleaning it. You can have a professional fix the repairs or utilize a patching kit for leather if you are confident you can do it on your own. An expert will however ensure that the same damage will not happen again and will tell you reliable tips to avoid wearing and tearing of your saddle.
To make saddlebags shine, wipe them with a clean and moist rag. This shall take away mold, oil, dirt, dust and other debris that has accumulated. If you have a leather bag, make sure though that the rag is not wet as too much moisture or water can ruin the fibers of the leather.
You can buy a saddle soap and use this to clean your bags. Place a generous coat on your saddlebag and apply it to the shiny surface your bag. To ensure proper cleaning, apply the soap on the bags one at a time. In removing the saddle soap, follow the instructions given on the product label and then wipe the bags properly using a clean and gentle cloth. You will see your bags free of grime, debris, mold, dust and dirt.
Buy a shoe polish applicable to the color and type of bags you have. Apply this on to all the sides and flaps with an applicator brush. The top and the front of the bags should be polished last. Allow the shoe polish to dry. If your bags are made of leather, there is a leather polish you can also use.
After a while , use a shine brush to take off the polish. If your leather saddlebags are weathered or dry, place another coat of the polish using the rag this time dipped in water. Let the polish dry and then again remove this using the shine brush.
If you feel the shine is not yet enough, place another coat and use a blow dryer or a heat gun to dry it. The heat from these equipments shall liquefy the polish thus it will get into the leather's pores. Make sure you do not burn the leather. When you see the polish has melted, wipe it with a clean and dry rag and leave to dry. Afterwards, brush the bags and you will see them gleam . When using shoe polish though, do it in an area where there are no clothes or a carpet as the polish can be very messy. It is also hard to remove.
