A skilled carpenter can create anything that can exceed anyone's expectations. It's a fun profession really; it never fails to bring in the good things in life. The world of carpentry however, is more complicated than anyone would like to think.
For starters, there has to be that connection that brings the working hands, the mind, and the masterpiece in the center of it all together. Even if some important aspects of carpentry are passed on through the ages with the emergence of new ideas and concepts, like understanding how woodworking unfolds itself, the tools that assists the carpenter's hands and the structures themselves, the integrity in the act of building something for a purpose has somehow been lost these days.
Integrity is a concept of having consistency in all actions, methods used, the values, the principles followed, and measures in the expectations and the outcomes. As carpenters, there has to be integrity in what they make; it's never about mastering the art alone, it's also about having integrity at what they do. And that is what makes good carpenters. And it is also one thing that many aspiring builders these days failed to take with them.
As carpenters are intent on building beautiful and useful things to perfect their craft and make good money out of it, integrity relates to their profession in so many ways, particularly in the ethical and moral approaches of the structure they will build for the community. Unfortunately, as the craft evolved over time, especially with its personality, integrity seems the hardest hit, and it became evident in the trade. Consistency and honesty in some ways ceased to guide the hands and the mind in making structures with passion and integrity. It would be safe to say that these days most carpenters have unconsciously dismissed the importance of both passion and integrity in their trade as they now answer to a much higher power present - the inspector.
That's right! The new system enforced to encourage and support efficiency and excellence supposedly has changed a lot of things. Inspections, codes and permits were introduced to ensure the integrity of the craft. Surprisingly, this made for a different road, as simply passing the inspection process is now becoming the main obsession of the carpenter. It's far from the touch of integrity in building beautifully-crafted structures involving passion and appreciation.
Carpenters should be fully aware of the difference here. They should strive to create something not only to pass the inspections, but because they wanted to put their hearts and minds to it, because they maintained some form of integrity on it.
It is unfortunate to see the lifeless codes now becoming the main focus of carpenters on building things and construction. It is as if they have been diverted from the real act, which is maintaining integrity in what they are building, and made to monotonously craft anything just because it is what they are supposed to do.
It is almost as if carpentry (the real carpentry that is), is slowly becoming a sad and lost art. If you want to become a good carpenter, then bring back the integrity in what you are making. You can be certain you will be making a real difference.
