When you are starting out in wood working there are a number of essential hand tools you must have in your workshop before you can start working on a project using woodworking plans. You may already have many of these tools at home, but if you don t have them yet, you ll have to make the investment if you want to become skilled in woodworking.
Claw hammer. This is a basic carpentry tool that is used for pounding nails into wood. Claw hammers come with two kinds of heads a finish head with a smooth and slightly rounded striking surface and a waffle-head with cross-hatched indentations on the head that will leave clear-cut marks on the surface where it is struck.
Layout square. This triangular-shaped tool is used for measuring as well as making angles and square marks on wood. Layout squares are available in six-inch and twelve-inch sizes as well as being made of aluminum or plastic. Buy an aluminum model as this will last longer under regular use.
Retractable tape measure. This is an indispensible wood working tool that you ll need when drawing patterns on wood. The tape measure should be at least twenty five inches long, have standard and metric markings as well as a locking mechanism that keeps the tape extended while you re working.
Utility knife. This razor-sharp tool is not only used for slicing thin material such as plastic sheeting, making scores along cutting lines, and even cleaning out hinge mortises. For safety reasons, make sure your utility knife has a locking mechanism so it won t retract while you re using it.
Chisels. This flexible hand tool is not only used for cutting wood but also for cleaning out excess material from joints. Chisels are available in a variety of sizes ranging from 1/4-inch to one inch, and you should keep several sizes handy.
Level. This simple wood working tool is used to determine if a surface is perfectly horizontal and comes in two sizes - a full-sized level that is around forty-eight inches in length and a torpedo level that is around eight to ten inches long and is used for small objects.
Screwdrivers. Another indispensible wood working hand tool, screwdrivers are available with an assortment of heads ranging from the traditional flat head to Philips and square heads. At the minimum you should a flat and Philips head in various sizes.
A sliding bevel or a T-bevel. Composed of a blade and a plastic handle, the sliding bevel allows the blade to be adjusted to create an angle with the handle, and then locked in place to retain the measurement.
Nail sets. These hand tools are used to drive nails the rest of the way into wood. Carpenters normally do not drive nails all the way into wood with a hammer since it can break the stock. Instead they drive the nail almost to the surface and then use the nail set to tap the nail the rest of the way.
Block plane. This wood working tool is used to shave small amounts of wood from the stock to give the edges a cleaner look.
