Hardy plank siding is a product which is made from mixing fibers with cement. This material, when combined and shaped into planks, has the same look and feel of the wood siding that was used in the past. This material even cuts just like wood planks. The only difference is that it is made of material that can more easily withstand the elements.

When installing hardy plank siding the home owner will first need to measure where the boards will begin. Start at the grade line and measure the size of one piece of the hardy plank siding as well as six inches at one corner of the home. Mark this measurement on the exterior wall of the home with a chalk line. Snap the line to place a line of chalk at this mark.

Begin installing the pieces of hardy board siding at this corner and work your way around the house. Be sure to properly cut and install the siding around the windows and doors. The one caveat about this product is that the corners are very fragile much like that of dry wall. You will want to shy away from using certain cuts on the corner of the home and the corners of the window. So this will mean you will to plan the cuts as well as the places that you attach the pieces of hardy plank siding in order to make sure that it will stay in place.

When you are installing the hardy plank siding make sure that all of the spots on the home are covered by the siding. You will also want to place boards in such a way that the seams are not open to the outside elements. Water can deteriorate the hardy plank siding, causing it to become damaged faster than it should. Therefore there should be no places where water can enter the seams of the boards.

Once the boards are in place you will need to caulk the hardy plank siding. This caulk will ensure that no water is allowed to enter the seams around the hardy plank siding and create a problem where the siding falls apart. The caulk should be one that can be painted due to the fact that you will need to paint the siding once it is affixed to the home.
