Just because your replacement roof has been installed, it doesn't mean that you no longer have to watch and worry about your roof. You do. The fact that you are now the proud owner of a brand new roof simply means that the odds of anything coming from the worry is less than it was before you the new roof was installed.
One of the most deceptive phrases used in residential roofing are the words maintenance free. There is no such thing. You are still going to have to take care of your "maintenance free" roof, it just means that doing so will be a little bit easier and the odds of something going horribly wrong is a little less likely than if you had selected a different kind of residential roofing material for your replacement roof. The better you are about making sure you take care of your roof, the longer you will be able to go before it is once again time to have it replaced.
Trees are hard on roughs. Branches that either die or are ripped off during a storm and fall on your roof can do an incredible amount of damage. There are even some insurance companies that won't pay for tree damage done to roofs if your house happens to be right next to a bunch of trees. If you are insured by one of these companies and a tree falls on your roof, damaging it, you are going to be responsible for replacing the broken residential roofing material. If you don't want to cut down the trees that are growing alongside of your home, you should at least inspect them on a regular basis. At the first sign a branch isn't healthy, you need to prune it. While you are inspecting the trees, you should also clean any sap and debris that has collected on your roof.
The snow might look really pretty when it collects on your roof, it isn't doing anything good up there. The first problem with snow gathering on your roof is that the snow is heavy. If too much snow builds up on your roof could collapse. Another reason that you are going to want to clear the snow from your roof is because when the snow thaws bits of water are going to get caught in the crevices of the residential roofing material. This isn't a big deal if the weather stays nice, but if it gets cold again, the water will freeze and expand, this puts a great deal of pressure on the residential roofing and can cause all kinds of damage.
After a storm, you are going to want to carefully inspect your roof. In addition to removing any debris the storm scattered on your house, you are going to want to look for missing/broken shingles, cracks, dented gutters, and signs of leaks. The sooner you're able to get the problem spots repaired, the less damage there will be to other areas of your home.
