Today, with so many options available, the cost to install carpet in the average home can vary from one supplier to another. Often, it depends whether you are going to install the carpeting on your own or have a professional carpet installer do it for you. As a general rule, if you have not installed carpet before and do not have the necessary tools to do it correctly, it is best to hire a professional so the job is done right the first time.
Although installing the carpet on your own can save you money, it can also create all kinds of problems that may require additional spending to correct. When purchasing your carpet it is important to purchase the best quality under padding you can afford, as this will prevent your carpet from wearing as quickly. Usually, both carpeting and under padding are sold by the square yard or the square foot.
As a rule, if using a professional carpet installer will cost you around five dollars per square yard to install it, so when purchasing a carpet on a budget, this needs to be taken out of the price of what you can afford to spend on your carpeting. The installer will also charge you to install the padding, but this is generally done at around two dollars per square yards.
When purchasing your carpeting, you need to know the area of the room. You can do this by measuring the longest wall and multiplying it by the measurement taken for the shortest wall, and then divide the number by nine to obtain the square yards required. Before installing the carpet, you need to remove all the trim boards along the floor, and thoroughly clean the existing flooring before the new padding and carpet is laid.
Once this has been completed, tack strips need to be nailed into place around the perimeter of the room. These strips need to be place a half inch away from the wall and not be installed in doorways. These strips can easily be cut to fit and come in a wide variety of widths, heights, and thicknesses. Be sure you purchase the right size for your project.
Once the carpet tack strips are in place, the under padding needs to be cut and laid within the tack strips, and not over top of them. This surface needs to fit snuggly within the tack strip border. Staples are used to adhere the padding to the sub-flooring so it will not move. If more than one piece is required, be sure it butts tightly to the next piece.
Cut the carpet, using the longest walls measurement, to three inches longer than required as this will be much easier to handle in the room. Once this has been completed, place the carpet over the tack strip on the longest wall, securing it over the tack strip so it cannot move. Then using a kicker, begin unrolling the carpet and kicking it outward from the secured tack strip and working your way along the shortest wall securing it over the tack strips as you go, until you have reach the other side of the room and your carpeting installation is complete.
