Today hardwood flooring comes in various styles and patterns, which makes finding the best product for your home's dcor much easier and more fun. When selecting this type of flooring it is best to look at many of the manufacturer's products at the same time so you can compare the various styles, colors, patterns, finishes, and warranties. Price may play a big role in which floor is selected as well.
Often products vary in thickness, type of construction, and number of finish coats from one manufacturer to another; therefore, taking the additional time to totally research products of interest can save both time and money. Some of the most important considerations when selecting a hardwood floor is the traffic area the product is to be installed in. If there are pets in the home with sharp claws, finishes need to be considered for hardness and wear.
Hardwood flooring is most often created using solid wood construction, which raise the floor area in the room from one-quarter inch to three-quarter inch overall. Wood floors usually come in strips or planks, but some also come in tile shape and are called parquet. Installation of each flooring choice is different.
Types of Hardwood Flooring
In strip flooring you will find they are like a tongue and groove that slip into each other and must be nailed on each board. These types of floors are usually made of solid wood strips and come in finished and unfinished strips. As a rule they are one and half inches to two and a quarter inches wide, although that can vary depending on the style chosen.
In plank flooring, the strips of wood are usually much wider than strip flooring and are generally available from three inches to fourteen inches. Like strip flooring, plank flooring comes in finished and unfinished boards. This flooring, like wood flooring, is available in many types of woods with various color patterns.
With parquet flooring, the squares are engineered like tiles and come in a wide assortment of styles and color patterns. These are also set up to fit into each other and require nailing on all seams as they are installed. And, like the other two flooring choices, you can purchase these in finished and unfinished surfaces.
So, when choosing a hardwood flooring product there are many decisions to be made. Before visiting your local home improvement center, you should establish a budget and remember that if the price sounds really cheap and too good to be true, it probably is a product made with inferior quality. Pick your flooring based on what the room is going to be used for, and choose the proper finish to meet the demands of the room it will be installed in. Always find out if the home improvement center has in-house installers or whether this will need to be contracted out.
