Flooring options are countless these days. The homeowner can choose from hardwood floors, carpeting, laminate flooring, linoleum, concrete, and last but not least, tile. There are even numerous types of tile to choose from as well. Installing tile flooring is considered a moderately hard job for the average homeowner. But it can be done with a little education and preparation.
First things first, the floor where the tile will be installed needs to be prepared. The new tile will only be as good as the floor underneath. The subfloor should be sound in order to support the tile. It is heavy and needs a flat, rigid, strong surface to lay on. A one inch subfloor should be considered a minimum.
.
If the underlying floor bounces when walked on, you may want to add rigidity. Uneven or damaged floors will need to be covered with an underlayment. Manufacturers frequently recommend cement-fiber board for floors in a moist environment. Concrete floors should be free of cracks and holes. Underlayment can be placed on top of existing linoleum flooring.
Your creativity can be unleashed when it comes to choosing the pattern for laying your tile. Pattern options are nearly limitless, but there are two common patterns that are chosen. The jack-on-jack pattern is the most common and it resembles the squares on a checkerboard. The running bond pattern has offset lines for each row and is the more difficult of the two. Your artistic tendencies can serve you well when doing a tile installation and can help you show off your individuality and uniqueness.
You will want to center your pattern in the room for the best visual appearance. You can do this by measuring and finding the center of two opposite walls. You'll then snap a chalk line between these two points, dividing the room in half. Then snap another chalk line perpendicular to the first one. Then use a carpenter's square to mark your center point and make sure it is square. You can then dry fit a row of tiles down both lines to the width and length of the room making sure to leave equal spacing for the grouting. Laying out your tiles in this manner can help you make sure you don't need to make any adjustments.
When you're satisfied with your design, you'll begin installing tile flooring from the center where the two lines cross. You will probably want to work one quadrant of the room at a time and work in small sections. There are numerous videos and how to that you can find on the internet to help you know just how to work with the tiles and adhesives. If you take the time to educate yourself before tackling this project, you will be very likely to end up with a floor you'll be proud to say you installed yourself.
