Laminate floor installation isn't the easiest home improvement project, but it can be tackled by the do-it-yourself-er with a little forethought and preparation. There are several videos and tutorials to be found on the internet. In addition, many home improvement stores have Saturday morning classes to help you accomplish this feat yourself.
Pergo came up with the idea of laminate flooring in 1977. It simulates wood or other surfaces and is composed of several layers that are bonded together with heat and pressure. The top layer is aluminum oxide which makes the flooring stain resistant and helps protect the other layers. The next layer is the decorative resin-based combination of melamine and aluminum oxide. Then there is the core which is usually high-density fiberboard that is saturated in resins to resist moisture. And lastly, the stabilizing backing that is also saturated with resins.
Humidity is a great consideration when doing a laminate floor installation since it is made from natural cellulose fibers which expand and contract with changes in humidity. Laminate flooring is not designed to be attached to a subfloor. Instead it sits on top of the subfloor making it possible for it to move with humidity changes. Because of this laminate floors are not recommended for areas where there is a high moisture level such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.
Once you've decided to tackle a laminate floor installation you'll follow these basic steps.

- Clean the subfloor making sure it is completely cleared of all dirt and debris.
- - Install a vapor barrier according to the manufacturer's directions.
- - Install the flooring again following manufacturer's directions and suggestions.
- - Install the base molding and thresholds where the flooring ends.
You will also want to have some of these tools and accessories on hand. Laminate floor installation kits are often available and contain several of these tools. Inquire at your local home improvement store or flooring retailer.
