Laminate flooring, also known as engineered flooring, is wood layers glued together with their grains pressed in opposite directions to add strength and stability to the product. This allows this product to be installed in rooms where hardwood flooring cannot be installed. The majority of these laminated pieces are three to five layers in thickness.
When installing laminate it is important to stack the flooring before installation. The reason the flooring is stacked in the room it is to be installed in is so that the lumber can acclimatize to the humidity within the room. Be sure to remove any plastic wrapping on the product and stack the product so the air can circulate around it.
As a rule, when installing this type of flooring, you should purchase at least ten percent more than the square footage required. When installing laminate, you often need to cut the product so that the seams do not line up, as this makes for a stronger floor surface. Before installing this product, you need to ensure you have a clean surface to lay it on, so remove all debris.
If you are installing over concrete, be sure the concrete is completely cured. Once this has been done, you need to install a vapor barrier to ensure moisture doesn't seep into the wood product. If you are installing over a existing floor, remove the baseboard trim and place it in another room before giving the existing floor a good cleaning.
Laminate flooring requires the first piece of flooring to be laid correctly. It is usually best to place it against the longest wall in the room. You want to install the first piece with the grooved piece facing the wall, and then use half inch spacers against the wall to keep the distance out from the wall, as these floors need to expand and contract, and are considered to be floating floors.
Once the first piece is in place, install the next piece of laminate flooring by sliding the groove over the tongue and with a rubber mallet knock it securely together. Some of these floors are called click floors because all you have to do is snap them into place, one after the other without the use of nails or glues. It is important to stagger the boards so that no two line up together, as this will make a better, more solid, floor surface.
Continue installing your laminate flooring, piece after piece, until you reach the opposite side of your room. When you are down to the last board, you will usually need to cut it in order for it to fit. Simply mark the plank allowing for the half inch spaces you will need against the wall and cut. Once you have installed the last piece of laminate, all you need to do is replace all the trim you removed when you started, and you will have a beautiful looking new floor.
