Marble kitchen countertops have been on the decorating wish list of many a homeowner. Many people love the opulence, style, and warmth that seem to radiate from marble. It is a natural stone and is much pricier than synthetics or laminate countertops. There are a lot of steps involved in manufacturing a countertop made of marble.
The first step is to transport the stone to the factory. Although marble is a stone, it is fragile and still needs to be protected from being damaged during transport. The large chunks of stone can be chipped or broken in a fall. The transport trucks are packed with rubber foam that is molded to fit the compartment of the truck. Then the pieces are placed in the compartment and taken to the factory.
Since the marble arrives in large chunks, the next step is to cut it into smaller, manageable pieces. The chunks are cut into slabs with a high-precision saw. Some pieces are cut into squares, some slabs are cut to measure over one inch thick. The thicker cut slabs are then processed as solid countertops and delivered in its uncut state.
After the cutting process, the pieces are then water blasted to smooth away any nicks or other imperfections around the edges and on the surface. Once the water blasting process is completed, the pieces are then buffed with increasingly finer sandpapers, with the coarsest sandpaper being the first buffing and the finest sandpaper being the last buffing. The pieces are then polished to create a glistening appearance.
Marble kitchen countertops can be customized to suit your taste. You can have special details worked into the marble, such as intensifying or diminishing the color of the veins that run through the marble. You can also have marble edge coverings, backsplashes, and border tiles created to match the countertop. Naturally, customizing creates a higher price tag.
Since marble is a natural resource, there are no two pieces of marble that is exactly the same. Each piece will showcase a slightly different anomaly. For instance, the vein of color that runs through one piece of marble will branch off slightly differently in another piece. This uniqueness is part of the attraction that people have for marble.
Marble is beautiful, easy to clean, sturdy, yet fragile. However, it is more durable than laminate countertops and will last longer. While it is resistant to burns and scratches, it is prone to staining from acidic foods like tomatoes or vinegar and cooking oils. To protect against staining, you can apply a sealant to your countertop. As long as you use a heat resistant trivet to hold hot pans and wipe up spills quickly, you will find that the extra care that you take will go a long way in performance of your marble kitchen countertops.
