Las Vegas is called the "Entertainment Capital of the World," and many people consider it the world's foremost tourist destination. After all, it's full of world-class casinos, five-star resort hotels and some of the world's best live entertainment. But many people don't realize that the city is also the departure point for helicopter flights to the magnificent Grand Canyon.
Encompassing over a million acres of untouched wilderness, Grand Canyon National Park is a natural wonderland. The mighty Colorado River carved the 277-mile gash in the Earth's surface by sheer water power alone. But its length isn't the only enormous thing about the Grand Canyon – it averages about ten miles wide and one mile deep. It's a canyon of epic proportions, and it attracts an epic five million visitors every year. It's the most breathtaking member of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
The scenery in the region is nothing short of spectacular. Although backpacking and hiking are popular ways to experience this natural wonder, you won't be able to see everything properly from the ground. Grand Canyon helicopter rides give you the best opportunity to see the magnificence all around you.
Your Grand Canyon helicopter tour will begin with a free limousine or hotel shuttle that takes you to the airfield. You'll then check in and board a comfortable, modern helicopter. The state-of-the-art EcoStar 130 choppers that are used by some tour operators have reduced engine noise, spacious cabins and theater-style seating.
Once your helicopter tour begins, you'll soar over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, the Colorado River, extinct volcanoes, and Grand Wash Cliffs. You'll see plenty of photo opportunities, so bring several rolls of film if you're using a film camera, or freshly-charged batteries for your digital camera or smart phone. Grand Canyon helicopter flights provide headsets for two reasons: they let you chat with your pilot and fellow passengers; and they allow you to listen to an expert tour narration.
There are two types of Grand Canyon helicopter rides. Aerial tours fly over the canyon and then return to the airfield. Personally, I think the helicopter flights that combine aerial and ground experiences ("landing tours") are better than the strictly aerial trips. For example, you can take an exciting landing tour that includes a flight 4,000 feet down to the canyon floor. After you land, you'll see the Colorado River and enjoy some refreshments.
The Grand Canyon Skywalk (nicknamed the "Glass Bridge" because it's made of glass) is part of the experience during another popular landing tour. Over 200,000 visitors use the Glass Bridge every year to walk 70 feet out from the edge of the West Rim, over 3,500 feet above the canyon floor. No smart phones, cameras or electronic devices are allowed on the walkway.
Wear comfortable clothes for your tour, but make sure they're appropriate for the weather. Temperatures in the summer can soar well over 100 degrees, and you'll want to bring a hat, water, sunglasses and lip balm. A long-sleeved shirt is advisable despite the heat. Winters are cold and sometimes windy, so wear a jacket and bring a windbreaker, too.
Once you decide to take a Grand Canyon helicopter flight, book one as soon as possible. These tours are extremely popular and often sell out quickly, and this is one experience you won't want to miss. I suggest you book your helicopter tour at least a few days in advance. You'll find the best prices online. Just remember that you'll need to reserve your flight on the tour company's website in order to take advantage of the great Internet deals.
