Every now and then a new but fantastic traveler getaway suddenly develops into a very popular choice with worldwide adventurers. Word gets around the travel writers and industry media, and quickly travelers are falling over one another. Generally that secret will just be a new beach or holiday spot in an established location, or sometimes a enchanting old town in China which has been off the beaten track and has become more accessible as a result of enhanced accessibility. It is unusual indeed to find out that a "new" vacation destination actually comprises over 1700 tropical islands, and that many of those islands are uninhabited and blessed with attractive white sand beaches and virgin tropical woods.
That "new" holiday destination is Palawan, a very large province of The Philippines close to Borneo Island. Of course, Palawan is not new at all, but as a primary tourism destination it definitely is. Palawan has gone by the title of Last Frontier for decades, and to a considerable degree that name remains justified today. At over 1.7 m hectares Palawan is extensive, with a road system which is difficult to say the least, and there is still enormous capacity for any person who wants an adventure into the great beyond. If you want a white sand beach to yourself, then that is surprisingly possible in Palawan, though you might have to share it with a local fisherman or two. If you are a nature fan who wants to discover a new species of bird or damselfly, then even that is feasible too, as much of the rainforest has not been thoroughly explored.
It is mainly because of the marine life and bio-diversity that Palawan has formerly been most famous . The renowned marine explorer Jacques Cousteau described Palawan as having some of the greatest seascapes in the world, and expressed the wonder of its beauty as many divers still do today. With so much to offer beyond diving, it was only a matter of time before a spark would rouse interest in Palawan as a outstanding visitor destination for non-divers too. Conceivably that spark came with the beginning of the "New 7 Wonders of Nature" selection process in 2007. With very difficult competition from around the world, in January 2012 it was officially declared that the Puerto Princesa Underground River was among those 7 natural wonders. Puerto Princesa is the capital city of Palawan.
A surge in tourist arrivals in Puerto Princesa is both evident and measurable, but the most recent publicity has seen dramatically enhanced interest in Puerto Princesa and the rest of Palawan. Hot on the heels of that Subterranean River announcement came the coincidental use of El Nido as a filming location for The Bourne Legacy, which had one of the movie's stars Rachel Weisz exclaiming she could reside in Palawan forever.
Among the terrific things about Palawan is that it has far more to offer than the Underground River and the super scenery and seas of El Nido. The amazing landscapes and seascapes around the huge province are so commonplace and well scattered that it would require decades of tourist development to make Palawan look and feel too "touristy" for those searching out a new undiscovered destination. One area to check out is that around San Vicente, where the 12km Long Beach makes the presently renowned and very commercial Boracay seem miniscule in comparison. There are lots of other beaches to select from too, so add to that the mountainous landscapes, tropical rainforests and incredible marine life and coral reefs, and you can surely see that Palawan will be a supplier of "new" tourist destinations for a long time to come.
