Of all the many different chronicles and incidents surrounding the almost cult-like acclaim of the notorious US two-dollar bill, here is perhaps one of the most interesting, and surprising, ones of all. It purportedly occurred in a Taco Bell restaurant, but the same prevailing circumstances have been reported in various cases, with individuals being accused, and even seized, for suspicion of counterfeiting, simply because the receiver of the bill didn't believe it was authentic cash. In this particular manifestation, the customer entered a Taco Bell store and ordered items totaling under two dollars. When he attempted to pay for his order with a two-dollar bill, though, that's when the quirkiness really started.
The employee, with an odd look on his face, tells the patron to wait a minute, and proceeds to walk back and show his manager the bill. The staff member asks his boss if the currency is legitimate money. His boss says he has not ever seen one of those before, and that the employee should ask for another type off settlement. Then, the salesperson reportedly goes back up to the patron and tells him that they do not accept those. Since the consumer only had a fifty dollar bill with him at the time, he is forced to pay with that, which would involve opening the safe to gain access to the customers change. The boss, however, now very distrusting of the consumer who he expects has just attempted to cheat him, does not want to open the safe with the customer in the store.
The staff member than asks what the manager would like him to tell the customer, and the boss says to tell him to come back when he has REAL dollars. The worker then refuses to tell the patron what the boss said, so the boss then approaches the patron and tells him that he doesn't take larger bills that late at night. Now, remember that this supposedly occurred about eight in the evening, and they are in a well-lit mall with 100 other shops around them. A subterfuge no doubt, so the patron simply says "Well, here's a two", thinking he will just pay and leave. The manager has other ideas though, and he says that they do don't take those bills either.
The consumer, naturally growing a bit frustrated by now, asks the manager "Why the hell not?" to which the manager replies "I think you KNOW why". When the patron replied that he honestly did not comprehend why they would wouldn't take his two-dollar bill, the supervisor asked him to please take leave, before he called security on the consumer. Well, at that point the consumer is fed up with all this and simply replies to the business manager that he can just go on and contact them, which the manager then promptly does.
Shortly afterward a security guard moves toward the business manager and asks what's up. The business manager says that this patron is endeavoring to give him some funny money, to which the security guard asks more information about. The manager reports that the customer is making an effort to pay with a fake two-dollar bill. The security guard questions why someone would fake a two-dollar bill, but proceeds to request to see the bill from the patron. After investigating the bill, the guard turns to the business manager and tells him it does doesn't look fake to him. The security guard then asks the business manager what's wrong with the bill, and the business manager says that it's a counterfeit. The security guard says that it doesn't appear false to him. The manager then says "But it's a two-dollar bill", to which the security guard responds that indeed it is, and the manager then says, with a straight face I might add, "Well, there's no such thing, is there?"
Inevitably, the customer and the security guard both look at the business manager like he is a total ignoramus and it strikes the guy that he actually had no idea what he was talking about this entire time. Ultimately, the customer was given his food item for free, with a couple of extras thrown in for absolution. What an absurd thing to imagine that people have even gone to jail, simply for utilizing a two-dollar bill. But hey, at least he got gratuitous food, right?
