Certainly, there has been a bunch of brouhaha not too long ago about the popular coffee conglomerate Starbucks, and their relationship, or lack thereof, to the second amendment of the Us Constitution. The 2nd amendment, lest you've already forgotten those high-school poli-sci requirements, spells out the right of American civilians to keep and bear arms. Indeed, the 2nd Amendment is often referred to simply as "the right of the people to keep and bear arms". It was first adopted in 1791, when the Bill of Rights was first adopted. Since that time, we've been in a sort of recurring argumentative discussion over the value and necessity of the right for one to own and bear personal, independently owned firearms. Starbucks, it appears, has chosen to support this liberty, and permit its guests to bring firearms into its retail stores. This discourse took a very intriguing turn just recently, when, after being petitioned by thousands, being asked at a shareholders business meeting, and a direct appeal to their Board, not to put up with the guns in their stores, Starbucks decided in favor of the right for its visitors to bear arms in their chain stores, so long as it was in a legal manner, obviously. It was then, that a national anti-gun group known as the National Gun Victims Action Council called for an absolute boycott of Starbucks on Valentine's Day of 2012. Here's the kicker though, rather than causing a huge stir over the applying of this constitutional right (link here), the event had the amazing, to some, effect of actually encouraging the pro-gun crowd to actualize their own display of a public boycott, of the point of views of anti-gun activists.
Reportedly, there were tens of thousands of gun loving citizens that made a point (link here)to purposefully buy a coffee at Starbucks on Valentine's Day, and when possible, use a two-dollar bill to purchase it as a signal of their support of Starbucks recognition of the 2nd Amendment. There were even Facebook pages devoted to the holiday event. While Starbucks revealed that business was essentially the same as any other day, in most ways, they did make known the uncommon oddity of getting lots of two-dollar bills that day. Starbucks is rather unique for a corporate entity, in that it is the only large nationwide chain that has openly accepted the peoples constitutional freedoms, and permitted legally carried firearms within its doors.
So here's to ongoing support of the constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and the clear-sighted prudence of Starbucks in adopting this position on the issue, even though, by law, they really did didn't have to. After all, the amendment says "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" not "the right to bring guns into a retail establishment regardless off the proprietors consent". Good play, Starbucks, even if your coffee IS over-roasted and way too pricey for the typical shopper.
