The Cannabis plant, or cannabis, as countless associate it, has been around for many thousands of years. For about as long we have solid recorded history to review, that's beyond 7,000 years for some age-old Chinese references, there has been clear evidence of the practical and beneficial use of cannabis to benefit people's lives and enhance their cultural being. It is of no wonder then, that this practical plant would inevitably come to the good old USA, and man has it ever!
To begin with, it is thought, the cannabis plant made its way to North America with some of the first European colonists to the Jamestown area in 1611, but there is at the same time some powerful evidence that hemp may have played a role in some Native American societies, which would place its occurrence at a much earlier period. The first law relating to marijuana was in Virginia in 1762, and the law stated that farmers would be reprimanded by law if they did not cultivate the plant. Historically in this country, however, that would be the last pro-cannabis law for a long time.
In the beginning, everyone seemed to adore the hemp plant and it was treasured for all its multitude of uses, oftentimes written quite favorably about by well-respected dignitaries of the time. Indeed, historically renowned figures including George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson spelled out, in print, on the relevance of cannabis to the security and prosperity of the nation, and Benjamin Franklin could hardly stop highlighting how splendidly useful the hemp plant was.
Alas, the freedom of this plant in The united state was to be of a much shorter lived standing than these forebearers had advised it should be, and California, of all places, passed the first law to constrain cannabis in America in 1913, just 7 years after the "Wiley Act" was passed, launching a new era of FDA drug approval. Shortly thereafter, spanning between the years of 1915-1927, 10 states passed hemp prohibition laws.
The unfavorable furor over the cannabis plant really started to take extensive turns to the worse building up in 1930, when Harry J. Anslinger was designated to lead a concerted, and propagandist effort to systematically demonize the cannabis plant in the eyes of the public. Eventually, through the use of fear-mongering propaganda, and harsh false information campaigns, the hemp plant took a huge hit in the viewpoint of the people. In 1937, just one year after the disreputable indoctrination film "Reefer Madness" was released, the "Marijuana Tax Act" was passed, systematically banning hemp in the United States.
While to present cannabis is still verboten in the U.S., there are at this time 16 states that have adopted legal guidelines to permit the doctor approved use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. California set in motion the so-called "medical marijuana" initiative with their landmark passing of citizen's initiative Proposition 215 in that state. While conventional marijuana use is still legally forbidden in the United States, there are at this point, as of early 2012, multiple states driving ballot initiatives which would straight-out decriminalize the sale and use of cannabis by grownups over 21, in a similar fashion to the way that alcohol is presently regulated.
