The responsibility of caring for pets does not fall on parents alone, it also extends down to our children and to their children as well. Actually, it is the parents' responsibility to teach them that, and see to it that they get the message.
The thing is you are not the only one excited about the new family pet; your child has probably endured all those sleepless nights thinking what games he/she will be playing with it. Having pets around can be a great experience for children. Consider it a training ground, teaching them about having responsibilities and everything that goes with it. You also get to teach them how to show love and care on other living things, ultimately teaching them about compassion and love for nature. It takes time and some work on your part however. Here are some effective ideas in teaching your child that responsibility:
It all begins with having a serious talk to your child about having responsibilities and understanding what this does to others and to oneself. Help them make that connection to the new pet joining the family. While at it, you must come into terms with your child of his/her chores in relation to the new pet. Note that you are going to have to negotiate and compromise during this stage. You can declare that you will take care of the cleaning chores if your child will do the feeding functions for example.
Considering this arrangement, you have to see to it that such chores delegated are also appropriate for your child. Five year olds can likely assist you in cleaning hamster cages for example, though they may still be unable to do it on their own.
Try making a pet care chart clearly detailing your child's scheduled chores. As they accomplish such chores, let them see that you already checked the box to acknowledge their finished tasks. Award them with goodies or going out to movies if they are able to accomplish their tasks.
Make sure you teach your child the great benefits of keeping pets around. Tell him/her that it's not all about responsibilities, that it's also about the joys and satisfactions of having these beloved pet animals around. Show him/her how to pet both dogs and cats, and then point out the differences when handling smaller animals like hamsters or guinea pigs. As adults, parents should allow children to play, train and feed pet animals with a gentle touch so they will not learn to fear their children handlers. It's all about helping them discover that bond that should last a lifetime.
Always remember to remind your child of his/her pet care responsibilities from time to time. If parents were to imagine a perfect world, this would be where there would not be any need to remind them of their chores over and over again. But the truth is, children in nature need the repetition just to get the message across.
There will always be those rare cases when pets suddenly become aggressive for some unseen reasons. You must learn to act quickly and separate the pet from your child.
