While the world's past keeps the details of the wars it witnessed, stories about pets and their heroic feats in saving countless men are embedded in our personal history. Dogs. Known as man's best friend, dogs are being kept as pets for the following reasons: companionship, protection, entertainment, and independence. It may seem awkward to attribute these reasons on man's choices but these are indicators of the love we have for them. Dogs can practically go with you wherever you want to be, they protect you from unwanted strangers and events, and they provide entertainment with what they do, they play with your kids, and they do not require particular care because they are pleased by simple things. Among all others, their unquestionable loyalty is commendable and much of it should be emulated by human beings. With the pet tales we watch and hear about, it would not be so difficult to understand why dogs can sometimes be better companions on some of the dull moments in our lives.

Cats. These furry friends are known for their knack for cleanliness and their powerful eyes. People are delighted to see these cuddly felines play with their ball of yarn, to hear their soft meows and purring sound, their meticulous toilet manners, and their satisfaction at being warm. They also keep those rodents at bay. While their history is troubled with humane controversies and dark beginnings, they came to be accepted into the homes of today's societies. With that, they reached another milestone as being royal independents: they do not get away with what you do and are content on your lap or the top of the refrigerator.

Fishes. As pets, they come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. They grace aquariums with their swimming prowess and they do not require high maintenance. Because they make aquariums their home, the house is kept neat. They even serve as animated decorations in the house. Their food is accessible and inexpensive and although that aquarium needs cleaning sometimes, they are mostly not verbal when the cat lingers around.

Birds. Plumage, music, and flight: these are attributes that makes birds a wanted house pet. They fly with their colors and sing with their songs. Some of them even respond to your answering machine. While restrictions are now applicable to rare birds, the common ones like parakeets, doves, and canaries are popular. Like fishes, birds are easy to feed, maintain, and can be bred.

It is but human nature to take care of other living organisms. But pets are more than that. They become a part of an extended family that you miss them when they go away.
