If you want to see one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World from the bottom up instead of from the top down (as is more traditional), you'll want to take a Grand Canyon float tour. Not every trip down the Colorado River involves shooting rapids and avoiding dangerous rocky outcroppings. In fact, some of the National Park's most spectacular sights are along some of the calmest stretches of the river.
There are many reasons to choose a smooth-water rafting trip rather than white-water rafting. Calm water lets you concentrate on the spectacular scenery rather than trying to negotiate the rapids. Plus, Grand Canyon float tours on smooth water are perfect for families. They're more comfortable for older people, and kids can participate as long as they're at least four years old.
The scenery you'll enjoy depends on the part of the river you'll be rafting. One-day South Rim Grand Canyon float tours begin at the foot of Glen Canyon Dam (just northeast of the National Park, near Page, Arizona) and finish at Lee's Ferry. Your total time on the water during one of these float tours will be around three hours, and you'll stop for lunch on a pleasant beach. You'll also take a short walk to see ancient Indian symbols inscribed on the canyon wall.
There are two types of South Rim smooth-water rafting trips. The first and most popular tour takes you by bus to Page, Arizona from Grand Canyon National Park Airport. The other tour begins with a plane ride. After riding in a 4x4 Jeep through Antelope Canyon, the rafting portion of the tour begins. It's a more comprehensive but more expensive tour package than the first type.
Las Vegas visitors can also take advantage of float tours down the river. A helicopter flight from Vegas lands on the canyon floor at the West Rim. If you take this tour, you'll have half an hour to look around the canyon floor before flying to the top and boarding a bus bound for Hoover Dam. The boat dock is located at the base of the dam. Once you get aboard, you'll float ten miles down the river to Willow Beach, Arizona.
Your river craft will depend on your tour operator. Most operators use motorized rubber pontoon rafts that can accommodate 19 people comfortably. In some cases, however, you'll be able to row your raft down the river, accompanied by a professional guide. You'll need to be in good physical condition to take one of these rowing tours. Also, passengers on these particular smooth-water rafting tours are usually required to be at least 16 years old.
Most people book these tours between June and August. If your schedule is flexible and you'd like to avoid the peak season, consider booking a smooth-water raft tour during September or between May and early June.
During your float trip, apply plenty of sunscreen and drink lots of water. If you'll be rowing your boat, make sure you're in good physical condition. Motorized boats require very little physical exertion, however, and they let their passengers focus on the natural wonders they're seeing.
