The aging process, no matter how gradual it may take place , always happens, and there is no stopping it. Aging slows down body functions, causes degeneration of body systems, and causes wrinkles to form in the skin. Of course, aging is irreversible, but with vitamins, they can be slowed down. Perhaps this is the main reason for the high volumes of sales of anti-aging supplements. Many people would want to be perpetually young - or to look perpetually young - if they choose to. Perhaps people can't be young forever, but fortunately, through the regular intake of some vitamins, they can look as young as they could manage. So here are five vitamins that can cause the aging process to slow down:
1. Vitamin C: This vitamin is an antioxidant. It helps destroy free radicals that can damage many body parts, such as the skin. Even if you are extra careful with what you eat and with your environment, your skin will always accumulate damage over time, and Vitamin C can help prevent the damage before it occurs. In topical form, vitamin C can also block ultraviolet rays, which are one of the primary triggers of skin cancer. Vitamin C helps the skin so much, because it is involved in the production and maintenance of collagen - the structural protein of the skin . Vitamin C also helps regenerate the supply of other bodily antioxidants such as Vitamin E and it also shown to reduce risk for many cancers, for cardiovascular disorders , and for cataracts.
2. Vitamin E: The most popular antioxidant, Vitamin E destroys free radicals that harm the body in many ways. Vitamin E also assists in improving immune function and in facilitating the expression of DNA . It also prevents unnecessary blood clots from occurring (thus lessening the risk for strokes) and lowers the levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) or "bad cholesterol". Vitamin E is also a brain vitamin; it is thought the antioxidant effects of Vit. E applies also to brain cells, thus delaying degeneration of brain cells.
3. Vitamin D: If you're familiar with osteoporosis, you should also be familiar with this vitamin, which prevents the progression of osteoporosis. (Osteoporosis is a condition in which bone density decreases, so bones are thought to contain "pores" that make them hollow and more vulnerable to fractures.) Vitamin D enhances absorption of calcium and mineralization of the bones. Also, Vitamin D is thought to preserve muscular strength, maintain proper functioning of the immune system, and prevent cardiovascular diseases.
4. Vitamin A: Vitamin A is an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals that can do much harm to the body. Also, topical Vitamin A creams are thought to diminish skin damage caused by the sun by reducing wrinkle formation due to exfoliation (or peeling of the skin). Vitamin A also helps maintain healthy bones and prevents osteoporosis (although too much intake of vitamin A is thought to contribute to osteoporosis). Furthermore, Vit. A helps prevent night blindness, or the inability to see at night.
5. Vitamin K: This vitamin is not something that we often hear, but it has an essential function. In fact, Vitamin K could be the all-around anti-aging vitamin. While it's ordinary function is to allow blood to clot properly (and prevent too much bleeding once it occurs), this vitamin is also shown to be linked to lower risks for the following: atherosclerosis, heart diseases, softened bones, and dark circles under eyes. Although the body produces Vit. K on its own, a diet containing Vitamin K is still needed, and foods with Vit. K includes lettuce, broccoli, spinach, and vegetable oils.
There - we covered C, E, D, A, K: these five vitamins can help you cope up with aging and delay or even prevent some of its manifestations.
