But if you practice cleaning your tank regularly like once a year, then you can extend your tank's life and its service many more years. Here are some smart tips on how you can go about cleaning your water storage tank effectively.

In the case of an indoor water storage tank, you must remember to turn off the power first since this is considered a hard-wired appliance, which means you must go to the breakers inside electric panels and turn them off. If plugged in, then you have to make sure that you unplug it first. If you are a person who wants to make sure of everything first, run the faucets on to check if hot water will come out after a few moments.

After everything is set, you can use your garden hose and attach it to the drain valve, with the other end pointed into the floor drain or the toilet. Then turn off the tank's coldwater valve located at the top portion and open the hot water faucets inside the house. Remember, you have nothing to worry about using the water when washing your clothes since it is already paid. Just continue to empty the tank until nothing comes out of the hose.

Close the drain valve. If you discover that the last bit of the water coming out is murky, then you have to turn on the coldwater valve and allow about a gallon or two of the water to flow back in. Turn the water off afterwards and open the drain valve at the same time. Repeat this process until the tank clears.
