Nothing signifies spring better than tulips. Growing tulip plant bulbs could be a simple yet beautiful addition to any garden if some guidelines are adhered to. If sowed and grown correctly, they could produce flowers for up to 5 seasons.
Ranked as the third most popular blossom, tulips are Turkey's national flower. They're grown to make flower arrangements, bouquet or to basically silhouette a gardener's flower bed. The Netherlands exports the bulk of the globe's tulips, but that doesn't mean gardeners couldn't have success cultivating their own outside of the said country.
Tulips are spring bloomers. They're planted during the fall, ideally prior to the first frost. Tulip plant bulbs could be bought through a variety of sellers, from one's local garden center to mail-order seed suppliers. There are over 3,000 different tulip varieties which vary in shape, size and color. When buying, make certain they're full and firm. One that is brown and soft might be wilting and would not bloom.
Very few implements are required when growing tulips. A basic garden trowel would do, or more particular tools such as a bulb auger or a bulb dibber fastened to a cordless borer are available. Tool choice would come down to the kind of soil, quantity of plant bulbs being grown and personal preference.
Purposefully sowing the tulip bulb during initial planting is essential as that's exactly where the flower would bloom. Positioning the tulip bulbs in the loam at a levelled depth is also essential as that would ensure the bulbs would blossom at the same altitude. They must be spaced six inches apart. Sunlight exposure is key. Without sunlight, they might not bloom, or even grow. Sow in a spot where they could get as much sunlight as possible; then again, they would grow in partial shade.
A tulip would grow in any kind of soil, but sandy or manure compost is recommended. A rule of thumb is to make certain the ground is well drained. When sowing, it's suggested to plough the hole 4 to 6 inches deep. It would depend upon the tulip variety and if pests are present in the planting site. If pests exist, like aphids, spider mites and mice, they would need to be sowed deeper. As soon as the hole is dug, bulbs must be planted with the rounded bottom down while the pointed end facing the sky. Once positioned, fill the soil in loosely.
Irrigate the newly sowed tulip plant bulbs only if the loam is dry. Excessive water would result in them withering in the ground. Such rule also applies all through the tulip bulb's life. Since they're planted during the fall and blossom throughout the rainfall season, watering them on a regular basis isn't needed. Rainfall is enough.
Early blossoming tulips flower during April while the late-bloomers during June. Flowers would approximately last a month. In order for the tulip bulbs to bloom the following year as well, it is ideal to cut back flowers after the blossoms have begun to dull in color. Composting the soil during spring and autumn would also aid with the next season's blooms. A few gardeners dig up the plant bulbs after they flower and stock them up in a cool, dry area like a shed, and then replant them during fall.
