A lot of people find gardening a fulfilling and relaxing hobby. Growing one's own vegetables, fruits and berries at home presents significant savings over buying them at the supermarket whilst delivering superior flavor & the assurance of a natural growth process. Growing blossoms is a simple way of adding splashes of beautiful color to one's environment. Whether flower or food, plants one's in a position to cultivate in his own garden are usually seeds. Then again, plant bulbs work a little bit distinctly, and there are a few rules of thumb on needs to follow when growing bulbs.
Bulbs or corms require to be sowed when they're dormant for the year. Corms for plants that grow during the summer must be sowed in fall or winter. Corms that blossom in the fall are ideally planted during the spring. When growing plant bulbs, one must aim to sow them at a deepness of roughly twice their height around 3 to 4 inches apart. Perennials, conversely, need to be sowed with their roots into the fertile ground, and their crowns or tops, just at the top soil level. They also require more space in comparison to other corms, so seek to sow them at least 6 inches apart.
Corms tend to thrive in fertile loam that provides sufficient drainage and a buffered pH of between 5.5 & 7. Most foliage do best in loan of this pH and quality. If one tests his soil and find it's too acidic, add sulfur to lessen the acidity. If one finds it too alkaline, one could add some lime to increase its acidity. That being said, whilst such are ideal conditions for plant bulbs, corms are really hearty, and could still flourish in less perfect conditions. Corm even does well in infertile & grimy soils, provided sufficient fertilize is added regularly.
Adequate drainage is essential to ensure the plant corms don't rot over time. Elevated garden beds do well in such consideration; adding sand to the loam would also improve drainage substantially. Whilst bulbs would generally work well in most loam without additional fertilization, if one is inclined to put compost, be very cautious not to expose the corms themselves to the compost, as they would burn. When planting corms, keep them away from trees, as root systems of trees utilize majority, if not every bit, of the nutrients in adjacent soil for themselves, leaving not any for the corms to try and flower nearby.
Plant bulbs could be successfully cultivated in pots. Fill a pot half full using the soil of one's choosing, lay the corm flat, and then put soil up to the pot rim. Don't allow one's potted corms to bake by exposing them to excessive direct sunlight, and take them indoors as soon as they start to blossom.
As for maintenance, corms seldom need watering. Water when initially sowing, and don't water again unless one lives in a location that experiences very little rainfall. Prune evergreens of any wilted branches, and prune summer foliage when they get affected by frost. As soon as plant bulbs have successfully bloomed, very little additional maintenance would be needed.
