Plants that need an underground, thickset storage is called plant bulbs. These bulbs generally require the deep and cold storage from underneath the ground to store the needed nutrients essential for its growth. Also, their life cycle is constant as they annually produce set of gorgeous flowers at the same time every year. It goes with three periods. First is its period of growth where the chilling and other preparations take place. Second is the flowering period where all efforts in growing it pay off as the displays of dazzling flowers take place. And lastly, the dormancy period where it dies back to the ground after the blooms have fade away.
Bulbs can be divided into five types according to its storage structures. They are the following:
True Bulbs
A true bulb has five general parts. First is the basal plate where the roots grow and adhere with the soil. Next are the fleshy scales that serve as the storage site for nutrients needed for the plant's growth. Another is the tunic that covers and protects the fleshy scales. Also, there's a structure called lateral buds where the offsets or another bud forms later on in the bulb's life. And lastly, you can see the shoots where the developing flower and leaf buds are found. It is reproduced using the digging and dividing skills of the gardener.
Corms
Corms are somehow similar with true bulbs, even with its way of propagating. However, the only thing that distinguishes it from true bulbs is its absence of visible storage rings when you cut it in half. Also, corms like true bulbs must be screened once you get hold of the tufts from underneath the ground. Dispose of the decaying bulbs and plant again the remaining ones. This way you'll get to have more flowers to bloom the next season around.
Tubers
Tubers, unlike the first two types, lack two parts; the basal plate and the tunic covering. The basal plate, as mentioned earlier is where the roots surface and the tunic is what guards the storage site for nutrients.
Tuberous Roots
If the other plant bulbs store their nutrients in a stem structure called fleshy scales, the tuberous roots store theirs into their own roots. These plant bulbs should not be divided until it is ready to be planted.
Rhizomes
Rhizomes grow horizontally from underneath the ground causing it to lurk in places that it is not supposed to be at. That is why it is important to control its growth. When planning to propagate these bulbs. Just cut off at least 5 cm of the roots and plant it in a pot rich in water and fertilizer. These new bulbs will grow and bud in the succeeding year.
There are a lot of plant bulbs available in the market nowadays; if you would want to add some color in your lawn you might as well try to plant these plants. It will not make you lawn aesthetically appealing but it would also make life more joyous than ever.
