Online shopping is considered by a lot of people as one of the greatest inventions of the late 20th century. Never has shopping been more convenient ever since the popularity of those services that entitle people who can't get out of their houses to have a personal shopper and buy them everything they want (well, mostly groceries) for a small fee. Of course, the biggest difference with these shoppers and online stores in that with the latter, you have feel more controlled of the entire process of purchasing stuff. You browse through the merchandise, click on the thing you want to buy, specify how many and be informed of the cost. The process makes you feel like you have more in charge of buying the stuff that you want. With a personal grocer or shopper, you feel like you are at their mercy.
However, not everything is really great with shopping online. There are some minor defects that if solved, should benefit everyone, - from the customers who buy stuff to the online sellers who vend their merchandise. Of course, there are major issues that may be more difficult to solve; for example, the delivery time of perishable items, or fitting items that come in sizes. How can you possibly know that a dress fits you right there and then if you are going to buy it online? In an actual store, you march ahead to the fitting room and see yourself in the mirror. Online, you are left to calculate and hope for the best. Otherwise, you will most likely have to let someone alter it for you or you may need to return it to the company for them to give you a replacement in a better-fitting size.
But an inconvenience that can be easily remedied is related to companies that have both actual and virtual stores. Say for example, its online shop allows for returns and exchanges, you would also expect the actual store to have the same policy. That is not the case in a number of companies. These inconsistent policies can disappoint people who are just starting to experience online shopping
Another frustrating detail about online shopping is the usual practice of adding shipping costs towards the end of the check-out or sale process. You have already selected an item, know of its price, details, shipping time, taxes and other charges, and just when you will finally give your credit card information, that will be the only time you will be told of the shipping charges. Since most sites' charges for shipping are pretty standard wherever you are in the US, why not add the cost to the item's price once the item has been chosen? It can make a lot of people leave their virtual shopping carts if they only discovered towards the second to the last step of purchasing that they will have to pay more than $70 in shipping. If the information is presented beforehand, then people will still think that the shipping costs are expensive, but they won't exactly feel bad that they were 'baited' into buying and 'switched' towards the end.
