People who are more or less Windows savvy more than any other OS out there will be naturally more familiar working with a Windows based FLAC to MP3 converter. The search for a software application that supports FLAC doesn't end there. More people will be more than willing to use a FLAC converting application that is free of charge.
Enter Foobar2000
Well, this is the point where Foobar2000 basically walks in the house for many people. It's a Windows based software application that has a menu and interface that is pretty easy to understand. It's freeware so it shouldn't cost people anything to download, install, and use. Other than that it supports free lossless audio codec formats and it can convert from that file format into the other music formats that Foobar2000 already supports.
Foobar2000 supports WMA, OGG, FLAC, MP3, and a host of other audio file formats, which makes it quite versatile. Comparing FLAC and MP3, FLAC compresses all the original data from an audio CD unlike MP3 and the other compressed audio formats. Unfortunately, this also makes FLAC files relatively larger by comparison to the MP3 and other similar file formats.
Since the disparity in the file size is significantly large, many portable music player devices today do not support FLAC. Foobar2000 can be used as a FLAC to MP3 converter since it supports both FLAC and MP3. This software application uses the LAME MP3 encoder when it converts from the FLAC file format to MP3. The only drawback is that it doesn't use LAME by default so users will have to switch to Foobar2000's converter option.
Making Use of the Foobar2000 Converter
In order to convert FLAC files in Foobar2000, users need to launch this application and pick out a song or file in their play list pane. Right click the file that needs to be converted and select "Convert" in the pop up menu. There are times where users will not see the "Convert" option when they right click a file.
Note: In case that option is not available they should launch the Foobar2000 installation program. The application should be installed with all the default settings since the converter is selected by default. If not then users must select that option when installing the software application. Users should also download the latest LAME bundle, which is also available online.
If everything is properly installed, users should select the MP3 option after clicking on the "Convert" option. Users are also allowed to modify the quality of the MP3 file to be created by clicking the button labeled as "..." found at the right of the "Output Format." Take note that increasing the quality of the MP3 file will mean that the file size of the output file will be a bit larger thus occupying a lot more storage space.
Once the desired quality has been chosen, just click "OK" in the setup window. Users will then be prompted to locate the lame.exe file that was downloaded along with the LAME bundle. Point the software program to the downloaded folder and the process will complete on its own. Foobar2000 will use this file in order to function as a FLAC to MP3 converter.
