Comically, it will be surprising to know that Superman and Batman are brothers. In real life, you may be awed to know that your friend is a successor of a prince or that you are actually considered as the last of a heroic family. Improbable but may be partially true. The motivation to uncover the secret ties that bind people around the world can be enough to prompt someone to become a genealogist. A genealogist is an individual who studies family genealogy. He may be a self-declared enthusiast or a professionally-trained practitioner.
A self-declared genealogist does his own research for satisfaction. He takes credit on knowing who his descendants are and may even extend to finding a justification as to why an individual he knows is not related to the president. A professional genealogist goes to school, receives training, gets certified, and abides by established ethical and professional guidelines established for the field. Because the study of family genealogy is considered a part of history, the importance of obtaining the knowledge of the field is important. In the United States, there are four known schools that offer training on family genealogy: Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, Samford Institute of Genealogy and Historic Research, National Institute of Genealogical Research, and the Genealogical Institute of Mid-America. Getting trained on one of these schools does not mean eventual certification.
The process of certification to study family genealogy starts with learning the concepts offered in the Genealogical Standards Manual authored by the Board for Certification of Genealogists or BCG. The manual contains 74 standards that help establish and preserve a genealogist's credibility in performing his functions. Certification is based on research or teaching categories by a systematic evaluation of a research portfolio. The research categories comprise the following: Certified Genealogist, Certified Genealogical Record Searcher, Certified American Indian Lineage Specialist, and Certified American Lineage Specialist. The teaching categories are Certified Genealogical Instructor and Certified Genealogical Lecturer. Passing the certification does not end there though. Every five years, renewal certification is required in order to maintain the skills necessary in the practice of the profession.
In terms of ethical mandates , genealogists adhere to the prescriptions of the Code of Ethics and Conduct which has the following summarized components: truth and accuracy, honor, observance of the principles contained in the Standards of Conduct, upholding the privacy and the clients' interests, protecting the public, the profession, and the discipline.
Although the recognition of a genealogist's work is still critically discussed in the historical community, the incorporation of accuracy and verifiable research is slowly replacing old stereotypes of loosely-based data collection. Existing literature are being re-examined to correct flaws and admission of additional research literature are subject to rigid reviews.
For the purposes of inspiration, genealogists emulate the footprints of their predecessors: Donald Lines Jacobus who launched The American Genealogist, a journal, Dr. Jean Stephenson, who helped lay down the educational foundation of genealogy, John Insley Coddington, who raised the bar in documented research, and James Dent Walker, who was known to uphold accuracy in historical data.
