Unlike scientific research, genealogical research is summarized under three distinct processes: collection of data, analysis of data, and conclusion. The goal of every genealogical research varies. It may seek to establish familial affinity by generation; it may want to substantiate current family relationships, or it may be used to determine migration patterns across history, behavioral studies, and degrees of kinship.
In family genealogy, the research process may take the forms of genetic genealogy, volunteerism, or data sharing. Genetic genealogy leans on the scientific approach to build a research. This approach involves the analysis of human DNA, specifically of three parts: the Mitochondrial DNA, the Y-chromosome, and the Autosomal DNA. The mitochondrial DNA is present in all individuals but is only passed down through females, the Y-chromosome passed down through males, and the Autosomal DNA which is taken from a child's parents. The premise of using the DNA as the main research material can be justified by minor mutations as these are passed down from generation to generation. In this case, similar individual characteristics are still present among the people where the DNA has been passed on to. This research approach makes it possible from two individuals to be compared at a biological level and to establish kinship per generation.
Data sharing is one that transpires between genealogists. Instead of major field work, accumulated data are shared which can lead to the following results: missing information may complete an ongoing research, additional information may lead to a clearer research conclusion, and shared information may bring about a new research subject. Whereas data sharing is easier in research, the consistency and validity of the resulting literature may be subject to discussion. This is because of the following reasons: an individual is only acquiring information and was not actively involved in data gathering, an individual may doubt the source of data, wrong information may be acquired, and the data gathered may radically change the direction of a research.
One common attribution of error in family genealogy is the credibility and knowledge of an informant. An informant is the source of the desired information which is perceived to be accurate. However, with the effect of time on memory, and with the lack of sufficient detail, an informant may not be contributing important information. Some informants may also receive remuneration in exchange of information. If one's motivation is monetary, the substance of the research may be compromised. Finally, an informant may not at all be credible because of the degree of relationship he shared or is sharing with the current people considered to be kin.
Volunteerism is an indirect method of seeking data on family genealogy. Information may be sought by mail, replies to advertisements, or online forums. Volunteerism can also be seen as a means to get involved in research. People associate themselves with organizations or individuals dealing with family genealogy in order to further the research process. Others volunteer by devising software to ease data management while others get involved in various functions through research completion.
