A Short Introduction to Botanicals
Artificial flowers have been around for decades, but it is only in recent years that people have started using them in lieu of real blooms. This is because in the past, artificial flowers were made using crepe paper and a few years down the line, thin foam. And while the end products were colorful, they could never be passed off as real flowers. Soon after, plastic flowers became all the rage. These were worse than crepe paper and foam flowers. Not only do they look synthetic; they also look cheap.
Advancements in technology soon paved the way for the creation of synthetic flowers that made use of various types of fabric, such as silk, cotton, and polyester. These are inarguably better than other types of artificial flowers, as they look both real and expensive - adding a touch of elegance and beauty to any room where they are placed. Nowadays these are often referred to as either "silk flowers" or simply, "botanicals".
Advantages of Using Botanicals
Some people think that fresh flowers are better than synthetic ones, and that's that. But there are advantages to using the latter instead of real blooms. Some of these include the following:
Cheaper - Synthetic flowers are undoubtedly more expensive compared to real ones, but given the fact that these last longer, in the long run they are cheaper.
Low maintenance - You need to water real flowers regularly, and make certain that the water in their container is likewise changed on a regular basis. And it gets worse if you're dealing with potted flowering plants. Aside from those mentioned above, you also need to repot the plants if they become too big for their container. With artificial flowers, you don't need to do any of these.
No health risks - Real flowers and/or flowering plants attract insects such as bees, ants, and even mosquitoes. These can prove to be harmful to one's health, as they can cause various skin conditions and worse, deadly diseases. Real blooms can also cause pollen-related allergies. All these can be eliminated with the use of botanicals.
More options - With real flowers, your choices depend on the season. This means that there are flowers which you won't be able to get your hands on at a particular time of the year. With artificial flowers, you won't encounter this problem. You can decorate your house with your chosen blooms anytime.
Disadvantages of Using Botanicals
Of course, when there are advantages, there are also disadvantages. Those who prefer real flowers over botanicals cited these reasons:
No scent - There are indeed scented artificial flowers available today, but most people reckon that their scent cannot approximate that of their real counterparts.
Still fake - Today's silk flowers are very realistic - so much so that at first glance they seem to be the real thing. But those who opt for real blooms maintain that upon closer inspection, artificial flowers still look fake, so it is ultimately better to purchase fresh flowers.
