Seeing the Grand Canyon from the air is a marvelous way to escape life's stresses, but it's even better than that – it's the experience of a lifetime. The first time you gaze upon the Grand Canyon's impressive natural beauty, you'll realize you're living one of life's greatest moments. However, if you want to make the experience even better, take a canyon plane ride.
Most Grand Canyon airplane tours originate in Las Vegas and fly to the West and South Rims. Grand Canyon National Park Airport, located close to Tusayan, Arizona, is near the canyon's South Rim and is the other tour departure point.
Two types of airplane tours are available. The first type is an aerial tour, which flies over different parts of the Grand Canyon and then returns to the airport. Landing tours are more involved, departing only from Las Vegas but flying to both rims of the canyon. My favorite West Rim tour packages include Grand Canyon Skywalk passes, rafting trips and helicopter rides. The tour of the South Rim I prefer includes both a helicopter ride and a guided bus tour of the park.
Personally, I think the direct air flight from Las Vegas to the South Rim of the canyon is unbeatable. Why? For one thing, you'll arrive at the South Rim in only 45 minutes instead of the 5 1/2 hours the bus ride takes. And, the package includes a ground tour that stops at Yavapai Point, Mather Point and the historic Grand Canyon Village. After that, you fly back to Las Vegas to enjoy a night out on the town.
The Grand Canyon Skywalk is one of the biggest attractions at the West Rim. Also called the "Glass Bridge," this amazing structure allows people to walk 70 feet out over the edge, 3,500 feet above the canyon floor. The views from the Skywalk are absolutely awesome! There aren't any connecting flights between the canyon rims – Skywalk air tours only depart from Las Vegas.
Grand Canyon plane rides often sell out because they're incredibly popular. You don't want to miss out, so book your Grand Canyon airplane tour in advance. I always recommend that people book their tours at least 72 hours before their desired flight. Booking ahead will give you a wider choice of tours and you'll be able to pick from more morning flights. That's important, because visibility is better and the air is less turbulent before noon.
Grand Canyon plane rides are surprisingly affordable – the price will fall somewhere in between a bus tour and a helicopter tour. You don't need to pay full price, though. By shopping online, you can find discounts easily. I've saved as much as 30%, and I know you can find the same kind of deals. Start your search by visiting the tour company's website, because it will post its best discounts there. Once you find a tour you like, you'll need to book it online in order to get the discount. Don't spend more money than you need to by booking your tour on the phone. Find and book your Grand Canyon flight online and you'll be well on the way to enjoying a terrific experience.
