This fact filters through economic observations to arrive at the information that, while sales of many merchandise have taken a nosedive, sales of womens shoes have soared. If we add to this one more detail, that it has been a pretty rotten economic situation for most people the past few years, we will arrive at a conclusion that simply says,
So, women and their shoes, what is up with that? Perhaps, women's preoccupation with shoes can be traced to a children's story of old. In the story, the prince found his lady love because of one-half of a pair of glass slippers that is so uncompromising it will allow itself to fit just one person in an entire kingdom. Nobody really questioned that story, although womens shoes now have standard sizes that are mass manufactured, implying that one size can fit a number of feet. Perhaps, with shoes, women have been looking for the perfect fit, that unique creation meant just for her. And who can blame them? Growing up listening to how Cinderella found royal romance with footwear at the forefront of it all must have really struck deep.
Oh well, perhaps nobody truly knows why women love their shoes. But they do. Popular contemporary fairy tales now give us the modern-day counterpart of Cinderella: TV's Carrie Bradshaw, the sex columnist who adores her Manolo Blahniks; the big screen's Elle Woods, the law student for whom four-inch-heeled sandals are comfortable footwear; the print's Betsy Taylor, the vampire queen who knows her Etienne Aigner. And oh, was not Imelda Marcos at one point someone interesting to the whole world, not because she was a first lady but because she had thousands of pairs of shoes in her closet?
Part of the charm of these fictional and real-life characters stems from their love and acquisition of shoes. It is the excess that the public laps up. Women buy a pair of shoes to complement a new dress, a new handbag, new hair color, new lipstick color, new shade of contact lenses, the new office wallpaper. Even with more than ten pairs of shoes in her rack, we might still hear a woman complain, "But I don't have a pair of shoes to go with this new nail color!"
Scientists, most likely baffled by this strange phenomenon, have tried the technical approach to deciphering women's penchant for shoes. You know how they encourage humans to be physically active by saying that endorphins - those happy hormones - are released by the body during exercise? Well, this time, they are relating the neuro-transmitter dopamine to the activity of buying shoes. It works similarly; while shopping for shoes, dopamine is released signalling the brain to boost the mood. At some point, the dopamine level drops indicating the need to head off to the store and get another pair of shoes to go with, uh, the newly cemented pavement she passes by on her way to work.
What is it with women and womens shoes? Well, perhaps we have been asking the wrong question.
