What are collectibles if not reminders of days past? They are really tangible representations of our memories and they have a value because they represent something that we want to remember. That's right; we collect things because we want to remember what these things represent - a past life or a person who is not present anymore. It is possible that an item means the world to one person and absolutely nothing to another. But that is what collectibles are about. We are all different individuals because of our unique experiences, experiences that form our memories.
Collecting memorable items as a hobby may be as old as mankind itself. Most of the time, people collecting a particular item does so only for the pleasure it provides. They do not care whether other people place any worth on the items they collect because the objective is not to make a profit out of them anyway. One of the benefits of collecting items with no conceivable dollar value is that it does not cost an arm and a leg. Any item that one person considers trash may be considered as a collector's item by another. It is also possible to spend nothing on your collections. Old cigarette lighters or empty cigarette packets and matchboxes, empty beer cans and wine bottles are items that some people would easily throw away which collectors would readily pick up. Paper napkins and rocks of unusual shapes and colors are also some items that go into people's collections.
It is not unheard of for these seemingly valueless items to develop some worth over the years. It might take some time, usually decades, for these collector's items to become historical pieces, but someone collecting them would generally not bother himself with the value of his collectibles.
There are also those keepsakes and collectibles that people collect, not only for the pleasure they provide but also for their dollar worth. It may be for display purposes, such as to put on show an opulent keepsake where people may identify it as belonging to its owner and thereby gaining recognition for the owner, or for resale purposes where someone collecting valuable items intends to market it to another for a considerable profit. This might be an expensive hobby but it is truly more akin to a business than something done merely for pleasure (although it can be both), which is why spending on the collectible items is merely an investment.
Some of the items that come under valuable collectibles are old coins, old toys, antiques and vintage items and works of art. Depending on what kind of items one intends to collect, gathering items to form a collection may cost anywhere from a few dollars to thousands, even millions, of dollars.
When starting the tradition of collecting keepsakes, ask yourself what you are doing this for and what your interests are. By doing this, you get an idea of what items should form your collections and where to look for items that you have decided to collect.
