Before people can begin planting and taking care of palm trees, they should do their homework and learn more about them. To begin with, when people talk about palms, they are actually referring to a certain group of trees and shrubs and not just one specific type of tree. Palms usually grow in warm climates, usually in the tropics.
When people think about these trees they usually picture out a singular trunk and palm leaves rocking and turning with the wind on a sandy beach in a dream tropical island vacation. We usually see palms lining up along the road as well in Florida, California, and Arizona. However there's more to them than just the usual object used to relish our imaginations when work sets upon us like a gnawing pain in the back.
Intimate Details
Not that many people have cared to ask just how long have palm trees been around. For those who are truly that curious, palms have been around even before mammals set foot on dry ground. Their fossils have been found dating back to the reptilian age. Furthermore, scientists speculate that perhaps these lush bits of greenery once grew all over the planet. Fossilized remains of palms have been found up north in Greenland.
Unfortunately, palm plants and trees only grow in the warmer regions of the world today. They are a lot more common in the Pacific Islands and in Southeast Asia. In America, palms have grown quite well in both desert and tropical regions. They also grow well in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay.
As stated earlier, the term "palm trees" actually refer to both trees and shrubs that bear the same characteristics related to palms. There are actually more than 2,600 types of palms in the world today. A lot of people think of them as tall trees that grow more than 20 or 30 feet in height. However, there are variants of this tree that are actually shrubs, which are relatively smaller.
Not only do palm species vary in height, they also vary with regard to the type of flower they bud and the kind of fruit they grow. Palms typically just grow straight up, which is more common among all the different species. Nevertheless, take note that some species tend to grow as if lying on the ground while others shoot up with the trunk remaining under the soil. Take note that most palms trees have no branches but there are a few species that do have branches that grow from the trunks.
Another important detail that people should notice is that the thickness of the trunk will vary from one species to the other. There are palm species that have trunks that grow less than an inch thick, which is rather tiny come to think of it. Nevertheless, the usual thickness of the trunk of palms normally ranges from four inches up to 24 inches.
The leaves of palm trees also vary one from the other depending on the species. Although most leaves are green in color some species have slightly different colors on their leaves. Many palms have leaves that can grow up to eight feet long. But there are species of palm trees that can grow leaves that are 65 feet in length.
