One of the first steps to purchasing palm trees is being able to identify exactly the tree one wants in their garden. People should note that there are actually more than 2,600 species of palms that they can choose from. The differences of one species to the next are not only cosmetic but some differences are more characteristic and internal. For instance, some palm species are more robust and can deal with cold winter climates than most other species out there.
Nevertheless, one of the easiest ways to distinguish different palm species is by their external appearance. Before people can choose the right species they want to grow, they should be able to figure which species are suited to the climate in their local area. Identify the trunks, growth rates, fronds, stems, and height of the tree in order to distinguish one tree from another. These distinguishing parts and characteristics can be compared to a prepared list of species that can grow locally in a given type of climate.
Noting the Characteristic Details
For people who have zero to only a fraction of experience when it comes to palm trees, the best way to identify the specie that they want is to identify and jot down specific qualities of the tree they want. To begin with check the fronds and figure out if they are pinnate (or feather-like) or fan shaped.
The colors of the fronds may be slightly different as well. Most are green but there are some that are actually silvery or blue-green. Another thing to look for is the stems on the fronds. Some of these petioles have spines, and others have teeth, while some actually have thorns.
The next characteristic that is quite easy to distinguish is the height of the palm. The smaller dwarf species only reach a maximum height of three meters while the taller species can grow as high as 30 meters. Nevertheless, buyers should take note that the climate in a given area can have a significant impact on the height of the palm.
With regard to the height of the tree, people will also observe that the trunks of dwarf size palms are a bit different compared to the taller ones. Shorter palms usually have a cluster of smaller trunks coming up out of the ground while the taller species usually have only one trunk sprouting upward.
The next thing to observe in palm trees is the appearance and general characteristics of the trunk. Some trunks look like they have hairs but are actually fibers sticking out of the trunk. There are also variants of trunks that are generally smooth except for the marks made by the old fronds. And then there are trunks that have crosshatch patterns on them.
Now that the specific characteristics of the palms that one wants have been identified, the next step is to determine if the said tree is suitable for the climate in your local area. A hardiness zone sheet from the United States Department of Agriculture will be very useful at this point.
This document lists all the palms that can grow in the United States and it also indicates the species that have propensity for growth in the various zones of the country. After identifying the specie of the tree that one wants, check that type of palm with the list from the USDA. If that tree can't grow in your locality then better settle for palm trees that will grow well given the local climate.
