Talent can be seen and measured many ways. Below I have listed some of the talents you must have if you want to play in the NHL, and ways to develop those talents. Five minutes from now you might realize that you're actually much more talented than you thought.
Talent # 1
Competitiveness – The best NHL goalies hate to be scored on. They don't know warm-up shots, easy shots or shots that don't count. For the best goalies, every shot should be stopped, period.
For example Hasek, Belfour and Roy could not stand it when they got scored on even during practice. If you ever see a goalie being lazy and just standing around at practice, not trying to stop all the shots, you can be sure that he will never play in the NHL. Without competitive nature there is no hope. However, if you have "the eye of the tiger" you hate mediocrity, you don't settle for the second place and you naturally push yourself because you want to be #1.
Talent # 2
Doing Extra – All the goalies that have succeeded in the NHL are hard workers, especially on the ice. When you make a save and the puck goes into the corner, do you make a T-push to follow the puck just as you would in the game or do you just get up slowly and get ready for the next shot?
Talent # 3
Natural athleticism – All the good hockey players like sports and they like to play. They don't just go to hockey practice and watch TV or play video games. In their spare time they play sports like soccer, baseball, basketball and all kind of games they've created themselves. They play because that is what they like to do naturally.
When I was younger we used to play all kinds of games, all day, all year round. Sometimes even past midnight in our backyard until our parents ordered us to come inside. How much time do you spend playing sports outside of team practices?
Summary
You are talented if you like to compete and you can actually enjoy pressure situations. Working extra hard comes naturally for you and usually it doesn't feel like extra work because you love to play hockey. You are willing to push yourself without someone being on your tail. Natural athleticism comes from playing different games and enjoying playing sports. If you have these talents you have a chance.
