While one cannot hide the fact that digital photography has its own merits, there are also disadvantages for this type of photography. Here are just some of the reasons why there are still hardcore followers of film photography.

Cheap digital cameras produce images with poor quality, especially if the pictures are enlarged to be hung portrait sized or poster sized. This is especially evident in the pixaelation when the digital camera used has less than 3 megapixels.

Low-end digital cameras are also more prone to getting ruined if they repeatedly get dropped and dumped. Film cameras have been proven to be more durable when it comes to the rigors of travel and movement. However, film cameras also have more movable parts that could wear out or become dislodged.

Another disadvantage of digital photography is that there is what is called a shutter delay. Before a scene is captured in a digital camera, it has to process or analyze it first before it shoots the scene. This time frame to analyze and process the scenery causes a delay between the time when the digital camera's shutter button is pressed and the time the picture is actually taken. This ends up possibly causing you to miss the actual shot that you wanted to get. This is especially true for lower end camera models.

While it is easier to store images now with memory cards or memory sticks, data stored digitally is prone to corruption or worse, it can get lost if the tinier than film media card is misplaced. That is why it is a good idea to always back up your media card data.

The initial cost of digital photography is also a huge disadvantage, especially if you are planning to buy high end digital SLR's. The camera, memory cards, the different lenses that you will use and the tripod to hold your camera in will all cost a fortune.

Even though you will no longer need a dark room to print your pictures, which will make you independent from the cost of commercial printers, you will still need to have your own special printer and special paper if you want to make hard copies of your digital pictures. This will ensure that the quality of the pictures that you will produce will be at par to film produced pictures.

Digital cameras also have a lesser through the lens creativity, especially if you have cheaper digital cameras that are point and shoot with a built in, non-interchangeable lens.

And even if all of these problems do exist, there are still a huge number of people that prefer this type of photography. But as technology keeps on advancing, these disadvantages of digital photography also keep on diminishing.
