If you have a dog with difficult behavior, aversive dog collars may help you in correcting it. Aversive collars deter undesirable behavior by making the dog physically uncomfortable or hurting them as a way of teaching them about what they should not do. While positive reinforcement training should always be your first choice when correcting unwanted behavior, aversion collars may be used as a last resort if all other methods fail to work. The different types of aversive collars include:
Choke chains. These are the most commonly used types of aversive dog collars and work by choking the dog when it performs unwanted behaviors. However, you should avoid using this kind of collar unless there is no other choice since there is no way to control the tightening of the chain around the dog s neck, making it a possibility that the dog will choke to death or suffer from injuries to the neck and trachea, neck sprains, fainting, nerve damage and might even result in death. If you have to use a choke chain, consult with an experienced dog trainer on the proper way to use it.
Prong or pinch collars. These dog collars have a series of prongs with dulled points around the perimeter, which pinch the skin of the dog s neck when it is pulled. Like choke chains these should be used with care to avoid permanently injuring your dog. Make sure that the collar fits snugly so the prongs won t move to the front of the dog s neck and pinch on its trachea and choke it.
Shock collars. These collars have metal contact points on them that you use to give an electric shock using a remote control, which can range from mild tickling to a strong shock. These collars are typically used to deter dogs from barking although some trainers also use them as training devices. If you have to use a shock collar, don t leave it on the dog s neck for extended periods since it can result in inflammation and irritation of the skin.
Bark control collars. These collars use aversion therapy methods to discourage dogs from barking and are generally more humane than other types of aversive dog collars. Some of these collars spray a burst of air or citronella scent when the dog barks to dissuade them while others use a thin ultrasonic signal that only they can hear.
Keep in mind when using these collars, however, that they do not train the dog on what behaviors you want them to do and may even cause them to become aggressive due to the physical discomfort they cause. Responsible dog owners should instead focus on determining the reasons behind the dog s unwanted behavior and addressing them before using aversive dog collars. For example, dogs may bark continually or at inappropriate times for reasons ranging from boredom to wanting their master s attention to demonstrating territorial behavior when strangers or other dogs enter their territory. However, if you really have to use aversive collars, make sure to purchase the right one for your dog that fits properly to avoid causing them undue pain or discomfort.
