Dog collars are a requirement for responsible dog owners since virtually every state either has state-wide leash laws or give localities the power to enact their own laws. These leash laws require dogs to be on a leash when they are in public areas. A leash serves to inhibit dogs from fighting or biting people and becoming a nuisance by causing damage to property or running out in traffic. In addition, leashes are widely used in obedience training of dogs, since they not only allow trainers to retain control of the canines but also provide a clear method of communicating with them. And, of course, every dog needs a collar from which to exhibit their dog ID and vaccination tags.
There are an assortment of dog collars that you can buy for everyday uses such as walking your dog, which are made of materials such as leather and nylon, including:
Metal-buckle flat collars. These are the most common and ordinary type of collar that most dog owners use, simply consisting of the collar itself and a metal buckle to attach it to the neck of the dog. You can also purchase these collars with a safety feature break-away buckles that allow your dog to break off the collar by pulling away if the loop gets caught on something.
Harnesses. These are an increasingly popular type of dog collars since they can avoid your dog developing neck problems if they are hyperactive and constantly pulling on the leash. And they can be more secure than traditional collars since it is attached around the dog s torso and chest, making it more difficult for dogs to wiggle out of it. Dog harnesses are also ideal for injured or handicapped dogs since they allow you to support your dog while they re walking, climbing stairs or doing other daily activities.
Martingale collars. These collars are designed for dogs with thin heads such as Greyhounds and whippets since they prevent them from slipping out of it. Also called limited slip collars, Martingale collars tighten when you pull on the leash or when the dog tries to back out of it but have a mechanism to prevent them from closing completely around the dog s neck.
Head collars. These dog collars look similar to muzzles but actually act as harnesses for your dog s head. Trainers and dog owners use head collars to train their dogs to heel and walk on leashes. The collar causes the dog s head to turn when they pull on the leash, discouraging this behavior and discouraging them from doing it again. The head collar is also a good choice for strong, energetic dogs since it will make it easier for you to control them. When using this collar, however, make sure that it is fitted properly to avoid injuring your dog. And it may also take your dog some time to get used to wearing a head collar so you may need to put it on them for only short periods at a time until they become accustomed to it.
