Not all dogs take kindly to dog collars at first try. More often than not, they will try their best to remove it by biting through the fabric or leather. Even worse, dogs do not automatically know that they are supposed to walk on a leash. This is why in most cases; the owner is the one following the dog instead of the other way around.
However, this doesn't have to be a permanent thing. With the right training, dogs can be taught how to follow their owners with the help of the leash. In order to do this, owners would need to be have the right accessories not to mention invest time and patience in educating their dog.
Training them with a Collar
At two months, dogs can start wearing collars. It has to be lightweight and regular since the purpose is to make the dog used to having something wrapped around their neck. They might try to wriggle out of it at first which is normal. However, don't give up and just put it back on their necks. Some owners allow the dog to play with the collar first before attaching it to their necks.
Make sure the Collar Fits
Obviously, the collar must be tight enough not to snag but loose enough not to choke the dog. Typically, owners would measure the fit of the collar by inserting two fingers between the fabric and the neck. If the fingers fit comfortably inside, then it should be perfect for the dog.
Use a Training Collar
When trying to get the dog used to a collar, the regular flat type is good enough. When training them to walk on a leash however, owners would need to use a different type of collar. There are actually various types available right now for training dogs such as prong collars, harness collars, pinch collars and limited slip collars. It is recommended that owners start teaching their pets with the use of a limited slip collar.
This type of harness would tighten on the dogs neck should they pull on the leash, therefore teaching them to always walk within the extent of the leash. However, there's no need to worry about choking the dog because the collar doesn't fully tighten on the dog's neck, just enough to keep the dog aware. Of course, there are other types of dog collars for training, but the limited slip is the one mostly being used nowadays.
Take them Walking
Once the training dog collars are in place, it's time to give the dog a much needed exercise. Dogs tend to be very excited and would try to run or walk faster than their owners, pulling on the leash. When this happens, owners should simply stop walking and the training collar would start "pinching" the dog. Once the dog stops, simply stand there for five seconds or more before walking again. This would highlight the idea that the owner is the one who leads them and not the other way around.
With a wonderfully trained dog, owners will have no problem bringing them to public places. Keep in mind though those dog collars for training should only be used during walks or in public. A regular collar should be worn when at home.
