We all know that we need to keep our cholesterol (CHO) levels below a certain level in order to be healthy and keep high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular problems at bay. High levels of cholesterol in the blood can cause arterial damage. More important than controlling total CHO is managing our cholesterol ratio, or quotient.
CHO is a fatty molecule that circulates in the blood. It is similar in structure to steroid hormones. One of its roles is to maintain cell membrane fluidity in every tissue in the body. Too much circulating CHO can lead to cardiac disease.
Solid CHO was first identified in gallstones in 1769. Biosynthesis of CHO is regulated by an intracellular protein called SREBP. The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine was share by two scientists in 1964 for their roles in working out the regulation of CHO and fatty acid biosynthesis. CHO is excreted by the liver via bile into the digestive tract. Approximately half of the excreted substance is reabsorbed into the blood stream by the small intestine.
CHO is transported throughout the circulation by both high- and low-density molecules called lipoproteins. Like they sound, they are composed of part protein and part lipid, or fat. High-density lipoproteins (HDL) are better for the circulation than low-density lipoproteins (LDL). For the right quotient, the balance needs to be tipped favor of HDL rather than LDL CHO.
Some experts believe that the best HDL:LDL ratio is in the region of 3.5:1. Unfortunately, scientists and doctors are not all convinced that this quotient is the best indicator of risk of developing cardiovascular problems. Trends are now moving in the direction of measuring absolute values for HDL-CHO and total CHO as opposed to determining the CHO quotient as a means for predicting who is and who is not likely to develop heart problems.
To a large extent, our CHO levels are determined by our genes. There are, however, things we can do to make the most out of what Nature has given us. These are diet and exercise. Where necessary, your doctor can prescribe medication called statins to help regulate your CHO metabolism.
Eating foods that are mainly protein, carbohydrate and fiber (fruits and vegetables) play a major role. Regularly consuming oatmeal and wholegrain foods are very helpful. There are a number of useful products on the market that may contribute to maintaining correct CHO levels. The foregoing should not be considered to be medical advice. If you are concerned about any aspect of your diet or cardiovascular health, you are advised to consult a qualified professional.
