Types of Shingle Roof Installation

The fact is that there are several types of shingle roof installations. You can get asphalt, clay and concrete tiles. The shingle roof installation should be handled with care. You will want a roofing contractor that has experience and a record of excellence. Asphalt shingle installation is very popular and in demand in the U.S. It can be used on residences and commercial buildings. It is available and affordable. It comes in different colors and styles. These shingles are also easy to repair.

The clay or concrete tile in shingle roof installation is good for homes in warmer climates. This type of material does not lock in the heat. The pieces interlock and last a long time. They cost more but add value to any building or home. There are numerous colors and types. The concrete tile is light and made of composite materials.

Metal

Most of these shingles are installed from the eave of the roof and then up. The first bunch are locked or hooked onto the drip edge and nailed or screwed to the prepared roof deck. The shingles are attached using nails and built in hems and clips. Once the first row of shingles is installed the contractors start building a stair. They add rows on one side or the roof so that each diagonal run will have the same amount of shingles. The installer wants to run as many rows as possible.

Cedar

With cedar you will want to install from the bottom to the top. You will need to apply building paper to the roof deck. The thick end of the first shingle should be pointing down towards the ground. You should use 2 rust resistant nails for each shingle. The nail should be 4" up from the thickest part of the shingle and 1" from each side. Each shingle should have �" gap between to allow for expansion. Make sure the lines match up. If you have excess on a piece of shingle then simply trim it. The next row gets placed above the first. Continue each row the same way. When you reach the peak put the building paper on the roof and then another row of shingles on each side.

Three Tab Shingles

These shingles have been around for 70-80 years. They are made out of paper and asphalt and granulated materials. They come in different grades and are rated as 15, 20 and 25 years. In the last few years these are made from fiberglass and organic materials. They are referred to as 3 in 1 because they have three tabs on one shingle and appear as three. To install them you have to nail drip edge around the perimeter of the roof and then apply a strip of ice and water shield to the bottom. Then apply a 15lb felt starting at the ice and water shield and overlap it by 4 inches. Then the rest of the paper is overlapped and the rows of shingles are applied to the bottom edge. An 18 inch wide 45 lb felt can be used.
