Roof Preparation before Installing Roof Shingles

It can be hard to install roof shingles and you have to know what you are doing. You have to go through roof preparation before installing roof shingles. An unprepared roof can lead to holes, cracks and leakage. The first part of preparing your roof is to rip off the damaged shingles that need replacing. Here are some other preparations:

Secure the Roof Boards

If you using the same roof boards you have to check them to make sure then don't need to be replaced. You want to make sure they are all secure and fastened down tightly to prevent damage to the lining or shingles. Also, make sure there is no debris on the roof like nails and other things sticking out of the roof.

Installing the Drip Edge

You have to install a drip edge which is also called an "edge iron" around the eaves and ends of the roof. You have to use galvanized nails of 1-14" so they won't rust in the rain and winter conditions. At the corner the drip edge along the sloping edge is laid on top of the eaves drip edge and then nailed in place. Install it the same way but it has to drape over the rest of the drip edge. If you have to make joints to make it fit then simply overlap the two pieces and bend the aluminum. Butt joints are made by overlapping pieces and forcing them together. Aluminum bends without much effort.

Ice and Water Shield

You should put down a layer of ice and water shield. It measures 3 feet wide. There are some states that require you to use it and have set out distances that the shield should be from the wall. Once you remove the backing and stick it in place you can't move it! It is extremely sticky. It is not cheap and costs around $50 a square foot. The product is stunning. It seals around nails and form a water tight barrier. Then cover large knot holes with aluminum flashing and hammer them down. The smaller holes were left uncovered.

Adding a Layer of Felt

When you add the layer of felt you want to overlap it a few inches and cover one side of the roof. The rows of felt get overlapped a few inches and takes very little time to cover the roof. When you want to install a roof vent you have to cut a small section of the roof on either side of the peak. This is almost the whole length of the roof.Then cover the remaining side with felt and covers the roof vent hole. This will be cut later on. Now the roof preparation is finished and is ready to shingle.
