This piece will help you understand roof installation and snow removal. Snow on a roof can get very heavy. So heavy in fact, that the roof could cave in! You have to relieve the pressure on your roof by removing the snow. However, this can be dangerous and you have to take precautions and work in pairs. Removing the snow and ice dam is very important. It lets the sunlight work on the ice layer underneath and melts it. Snow rakes are effective on ice and snow and can remove the snow from the eaves and where the exterior walls. Another option is to have heat cables installed near the eaves to melt the snow. They can clear the ice from eaves and down spouts. Here is what you should do:
Use a rake. You will need a rake extender from hardware. You will have to stand at the bottom of the house and far enough from the edge to not get buried. Put the rake on the roof and pull the snow off.
You can climb up on the roof with spiked shoes and shovel. This is time consuming and hard. Remember to tie yourself off or work from the ladder held by another person. Start at the top of the roof and work down.
You can use a large push broom. Wear spiked shoes here too. Start at the peak and push the snow off before it freezes.
Use cutting wire. Place the wire side down on the roof and pull down. The wire cuts through the snow and then rake with the other flat plastic side.
Snow Guards
Snow guards can protect your roof installation from snow. These devices let the snow and ice drop off in small piles or melt before falling to the ground. They were used with slate roofs but now are applicable with different roofs. They are practical, inexpensive and great for sloped roofs. They get installed on roof surfaces to protect them from snow and ice damage below. They come in painted steel, copper, lead coated copper, plain and painted aluminum, galvanized and zinc.
Roof Rakes
These are the safest devices to remove snow from your roof. The handles are in section form 6-8 feet long. You can add sections to reach the top of the roof. Then you simply pull the snow off the roof and onto the ground. Do not pull to hard because you could damage your shingles. Do not pull large chunks of ice off the roof. Remove the snow after one inch piles up.
When you have a roof installation done, you want to protect it from the elements. Especially, here in Canada we usually get a fair amount of snow. Snow on the roof can pose am number of dangers. You want to remove it safely and quickly.
